Well it'd be somewhat foolish of GM to try to buy Chrysler right now. I don't know what their motivation could possibly be. Maybe they want to stay bigger than Toyota and this is the only way they can do it for the time being.
But trying to acquire other companies because your company is suffering is a poor strategy. If you can't run your ship profitably there's no way you're going to be able to take someone else's unprofitable ship and get both operations running well.
If anything GM needs to get smaller. Get rid of the brands and models they don't need, get leaner and more efficient, clean house in the management chain, and start beating the Japanese at their own game.
