I am looking for a job
#1
I am starting this thread to ask for your help to inquire whether your employers are looking for any entry level graduates such as myself.
I have sent a resume to SAIC through Monster.com. Does anyone else have any connections at government contractors or environmental businesses?

My degree is in Integrated Science and Technology
Concentrations: Environment and Environmental Aspects of Transportation

Thank you for helping a brother out. Jay has already helped me, thanks man.

just a suggestion from the old and experienced:
You need to get your resume out there all over the place. More than just one company, spam the shit out of every job listing you can find.
Hotjobs, careerbuilder, monster, washingtonjobs, etc etc. and the bigger companies have their own resume/job listing DB on their website. submit your stuff there too.
it takes a lot of work, and the shotgun approach to get a job online. and never hang your hopes on one job that you see and really like. if your studies were in more of a niche area (like enviro...) you should also consider something more generic like consulting.

"update" your resume on monster every few days (change a little bit on it.... like on your adress change St. to Street and back) this keeps your resume at the top of the list when viewed by recruiters.

rinse, repeat

^ what he said.

that approach landed me a job in less than 2 weeks when i decided to move back here. Its a lot of leg work and a lot of effort. get out there to job fairs wherever you can also. work the connections you have and give them your resume... past coworkers/managers, professors, anything.

also, make sure your resume looks good - if its crap, no one will look at it.

Look at the careers site for Northrop Grumman, anything you find there I'll forward your resume internally.

Job fairs, job fairs, job fairs! Also, what positions are you looking for? What are you qualified for? Referrals will get you many more times success than cold applications.

Also, have you worked on interviewing? You'll need those skills at a job fair.

also consider :gasp!: a job outside your field. I've got a degree in Finance and Biology and when I'm not pushing Toyota or Kia parts, I'm selling cigarettes and MTO. Keep your eyes open for everything, you'd be amazed what kind of networks you can build and how they can help you in the future.

if you'd like us to look over your resume and maybe make suggestions, post it up.

That's cute Maeng thanks.

I just got a call from some marketing company. They wanted to schedule an interview so considering I was half asleep I said yes. They are called The Marketing Group and are located in Vienna. I don't know how legit it is considering I did not take one marketing class and don't remember applying for this job. How does monster.com work do companies just browse all the resumes on there? Oh yeah the president of this company went to JMU.

5 to 1 its a pyramid scheme. Get more specifics from them before you go over there and waste your time.

What does that mean? Just kind of curious.

A pyramid scheme is where you try to get people to sign up with you to buy or sell a product. You get a percentage of anything those people buy or sell. Then the people you signed up try to get more people to sign up. The first group of signees gets a percentage of anything the second group of signees sells. The original guy also gets a cut of anything the 2nd group buys or sells. It goes on ad nauseum. So its lets say each person signs up 5 additional people. It would go kinda like this

1 guy signs 5 guys
5 guys sign 25 guys
25 guys sign 125 guys
125 guys sign 625 guys
625 guys sign 3125 guys
3125 guys sign 15625 guys
etc...

The illegal version of a pyramid is where nothing gets sold, the only way to make money is to sign more people. There are many variations of the legal version but all of them basically suck.

Some tell tale signs:
1. A stranger approaches you and tries to chat you up, then mentions a job opportunity (marketing, sales, advertising, ecommerce)
2. Someone you know vaguely calls you up out of the blue about a job opportunity or a way to make extra money
3. You get a response from a job site with vague details about what the job entails and usually they want you to come in for an interview right away

I tried calling the same lady that called me and she just kept directing me to the website. She didn't really even let me get a chance to ask a question. Seems shady, I probably won't show up.

check monster.com and make your resume public, to allow for recruiters to search it. Like someone said before make sure it looks GOOD! If you have a security clearance (i think you do), check up on that and make sure you let recruiters know that. Exploit the fact you worked for the government if you're trying to obtain a government consulting company.

if you want for bigger companies check their websites, you can usually submit your resume online (ie: northrop grumman, bearingpoint, cgi-ams) Other companies check online, there are a TON of consulting agencies out there you can contact....just be persistant and contact them even if they're not promoting certain positions. Don't be afraid to call them.

If you find anything at Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, SAIC, or Lockheed Martin let me know I can get your resume submitted internally through each of them.
