I've noticed lately that there's a lot more play in the steering than there has been in the past. Because of it, I'm not able to adequately hit roads at the speeds I was used to, and might not even pass tech inspection at the next autocross.
My question is, could it be something suspension related? Is it possible to feel a lot of play in the steering because of a bad/blown suspension? Or would it have to be something steering related?
I wish I had enough cash for the dang CP Racing rack and pinion stage 2 kit...they claim no play and that it's a lot easier to turn than the stock recirculating ball on first gen RX-7's...

New steering rack bushings solved that problem on my Z.
My two feet.
Tie rod ends and lower ball joints are almost brand new...I'll check the wheel bearings though.

On a 1st gen rx7 you can adjust the steering rack and take up the slop in the steering, I had to do that with my '83 - You will need a spanner socket to do it, or ask Neil Maddox if he can do it for a few bux - he's got the tools and he's done this at least a few times.

Look down at the steering rack near the drivers side framerail... remove the cover on teh steering nut... back off the locknut, tighten the nut inside it w/ a spanner socket, hold the spanner socket in place while you tighten the locknut back in place. This process has to be described in more detail on some of the rx7 forums... my steering was pretty tight after I fixed that.

Neil had ghetto-fabbed his own spanner socket to fit on the rack, I had borrowed it to fix mine when I helped him build his rx7 racecar - thats why I just recommend taking it up there (he's on north main st just past the NAPA - look for the "foreign car service" shop that looks like a junkyard out front and ask for him - tell him I said hi.
