I'm not so sure - look at where the rotor pulls air from.

Dust sheilds + Proper ducting is always the 'best' setup.

The one on the passenger side is gone already - the caliper won't fit with it on. The one on the driver's side (which you see in the picture) will be taken off tonight.

exactly. Anything preventing air from getting at it in any way or holding heat in is preventing cooling.
