Turning to the dark side, Show car build

So I'm going to try to do some interior work pretty soon. I hate my interior (suffers the same design as e9x interiors), so I'm going to get some quilted leather sheets from leather seats prime. I'm going to go with white on the silver part of the door. If I could get red stitching that too. I would like all the silver to either be white or red bc when I go to black out all the chrome silver will be a useless accent color. Also I want to see if I can do my headliner my self. I've heard they're awful to do and my sunroof is huge.

Also i think yall maybe right with the ride height for now. With all the rain my front camber throws water into my face when the window is down and I've found it's becoming harder to get around town. I'm still not happy with the look on the fronts, but I'd rather deal with it later when it's not a daily.[Image: 600db409702d83d6f905e9bbe5c21332.jpg]

Sweet, I like the quilted look. Are you going to do black as the main color of the doors? The white/red will look good with that.

Headliners in general are not TOO bad to do. Hardest part is getting it out of the car and since yours is a hatch, it should just drop down and slide out the back. If you take your time pulling the old stuff off and prepping the surface, it'll look good. Make sure you either get thick enough material, or some headliner "foam" (you'll see what I mean when you pull it down) otherwise you'll see every imperfection in the headliner board itself. Shouldn't be hard to get the board down and you won't have to deal with the sunroof unless BMW did something goofy with how it all attaches up there (probable).

Yeah I'm going to do the door card Alcantara, so it might end up being gray-ish, but I'll try to get the darkest possible. Hopefully the car will stop being temperamental, so I can get some things done. It's not too expensive to do some interior work, but fixing the thing constantly is.

Okay got a huge update on the toaster. As some of you know my car has gotten the smokes, which has not gotten terrible yet, but needs to be taken care of. My dad called me last night and asked how I felt about building another motor because mine is not going to last another 10k miles. So, I am building a motor this summer. The part list I have so far is a sneed4speed rebuild kit, which I am going to do the max everything. This includes CP forged pistons and rods, ARP everything, all new gaskets, King bearings, Thrust bearing kit, valve seals, timing chain kit, and main seals. I have to get the block machined bc im gonna get a used one, so it'll be bored .5mm in the cylinders. The head is also going to get worked, intake valves bored 1mm and exhaust valves .8mm. I haven't decided if I want to upgrade the cams, but that will depend on how much my dad wants to put on my payment.

You may be wondering how is this child is going to afford this. Well my car is on my dad's credit card, which i only have 4 more months on, so the rebuild will go on that and I will keep making payments.

Here goes nothing, it is going to be a huge step, but it will make the car bullet proof and more stuff to add to my mod list for shows.

FYI... if you do ALL of that aftermarket work and don't do cams... /sigh

BUT... building motors isn't cheap, especially if you need to buy the tools. good bore gauges, mics, etc. aren't cheap.

Other things people do when they get that deep... "port" the oil pump... valve springs/retainers for your boost level... custom piping/cooling/etc.

Having built a motor "all out" I would not recommend going into debt for it. I paid cash at the time but it was a huge amount of money because there are a lot of unknowns that come up. If anything, a mild rebuild probably makes more sense if there's an issue with the engine. It will cost you much less and be much more livable in the future as a daily.

It's a show car, ain't nobody gonna be seeing your machined block

It sounds a lot cheaper to throw a good used motor in it and just make a new posterboard sign for shows that details all the work nobody will see.

So at this point it's either fix it or try to sell a broken car. I'd like to think of it as an extended car payment [emoji23] not sponsored by Visa.

And jake would you put a used turbo Peurgeot motor in your car? Also, I doubt I'd be able to find a decent JCW motor. I'm really not trying to drop 40hp and ft. and go to the S motor

This is just making sure the car stays working for as long as I need it to. The boring is just bc likely the block will have to be machined anyway so screw it.

Id much rather spend the extra 3k to get another 100k out of the car. Once I have a daily it wont see a lot of miles anyway.

Hah, I'm just messing with you. What's different between the S and JCW motors? I guess I always assumed it was "more turbo!" or something.

The head and turbo, I think it has injectors too. But my car makes 210 and the S makes 170. And my car has mahle pistons, but other that that I think that's it. I'm just worried bc idk what kinda issues will come up when I cant even diagnose issues with the stock motor [emoji23]

Or (as discussed on the group chat) check the turbo. You haven’t don’t any diagnostic work on the car to begin to determine the motor needs a rebuild. What are your leakdown numbers? Is there oil in your intake piping?
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

I'm doing diagnoses this weekend, had 4 exams this week and didn't have time. I should be doing a compression test if my dad brings it with him.

Leakdown != Compression . You need to do a leakdown test.

She's dead Jim...the past two weeks the car has been bleeding coolant and eating oil. I've had to fill up the car three times in one week, just to have to system pressurize again. I've bled the system four times last week alone. This Saturday I drove it from Southview to East campus, which after maybe 2 minutes of driving the car was sitting at 120 deg C, 250 deg F, so it's being trailered home this Friday. So far I haven't really checked much bc I'll just do it on my lift at home, but there is coolant everywhere in the engine bay. More near the water pump area and from below leaking from both sides. There is no coolant moving through the main hose, but there is some going through the hose under the reservoir tank. I need to get the intake off to check if it's making it past the thermostat, but I'll do that over break.

Still planning on rebuilding this summer, just have my fingers crossed I didnt warp the head.[Image: 82c8ed6b307d76e01841dbf902d9db74.jpg]

Instead of a rebuild, can you just drain everything then invest in a tow rig to bring it from show to show?

That sucks Chase, hopefully you're able to get it back up and going with out too many surprises.
