Since the interstate was a good little road, it got a nice coolant bath from the Z. I suspect the fan clutch is the culprit - the belt came off of the water pump, the fan itself got squirrely and hit the coolant temp sensor connector (and shattered it) and then of course the car started dumping coolant out of the radiator overflow. Luckily, we (Brian and myself) were about 1 mile from Brian's apartment, so we coasted in and parked it. Guess we'll see tommorrow how bad things really are...

damn...poor Z

Should I be telling you 'I told you so' about the mechanical fan...or is this just some kind of fluke that won't ever happen again. Either way repairing things you didn't intentionally break sucks.

It's not a common failure. My theory (I haven't looked at the car yet) is that the fan clutch shaft was bent, causing the fan to wobble. That wobbling finally affected the water pump pulley to the point that it jumped the belt off. We'll see.

will you please put out the debris flag for my trip back to school on Sunday! thanks!

Water pump shaft is bent. Don't know why or how - but I'm ordering a new water pump, fan clutch, fan, pulley, and coolant temp sensor harness. Yay for me

Well, props to Lethal Towing - the guy took a lot of time and got the car on the flat-bed with no problems. $65 from Charlottesville to my place out in the boonies. I'm going to dig into this thing over the weekend to figure out exactly what happened.
As I recall, the fan was wobbling a bit after I put everything back together the last time - I didn't think anything of it at the time. The actual fan clutch is straight, but it doesn't turn very smoothly at all. In fact, I'm not even sure that it was working properly - it might have been turning the fan at engine speed when it should have loosened up, which would have exaggerated the fan wobble and caused it to hit stuff and start breaking things (especially considering we weren't exactly idling along). I'll post some pictures later.
My two feet.
man, I'm glad the fan didn't detonate, that's super fun. I've seen that happen on BMW's just because the clutch is gummed up and locked (so the fan is turning directly w/ engine). That takes out pretty much all the hoses, radiator, and usually puts a couple dents in the hood. I 2nd ditching the mechanical fan! hock:
It lives.
The old fan clutch was absolute shit. New one is silky smooth. Replaced fan clutch, water pump, fan, t-stat, water pump pulley, coolant temp sensor. All is well.
Now off to get an alignment. Unrelated - hoping I don't have to replace the high-pressure power steering hose.. Argh.
My two feet.
wheeeeee. Good job John, sounds like she is almost ready for the showdown.

We'll see. I also removed a bunch of emissions crap that was broken - the entire AIV system was clogged and making interesting noises, so it got trashed. 10lbs of crap that was tucked up into both front fenderwells. Now I've got to plug a couple of holes in the mid-pipes, remove/plug another vacuum line (that now goes nowhere), and *possibly* purchase an aftermarket ECU to lean things back out a touch (with the nasty side effect of upping the boost :twisted . Like I said, we'll see.
My two feet.
