btw, not a common problem. I had never heard of this before, never had it happen before, and never known someone to have this issue. Crappy glovebox? Cooling issues? Common. Again, its so crappy, sell it.

Gotta agree with Joey on all that. They are fun cars and cheap enough to repair that I don't mind daily driving one IF I have a backup car in case stupid things like this happen. I will definitely sell it if I ever get to the point of only being able to have one car.

As far as it being common or not. It was common enough that google autocompleted and added "when cold" when I started typing "e36 door won't close". It may not be the most common problem they have, but it's common enough to have a bunch of threads on it.

I feel your pain. Your door won't close but mine won't open. You gotta yank hard on the handle for it to pop open on a cold morning.

After I trudged up the street to the VW this morning, in 15* weather with the wind blowing and hair still wet from the shower, I had to really tug on the door to unstick it. Which caused all the powdery snow around the door frame to suck into the car and settle in an nice even coat on the driver's seat.

Rookie mistake, and I rocked a damp ass all morning to remind me of it.

Got my door locks/latches greased up with white lithium so they are now hopefully cold proof. At the very least, I could shut my door today so that was an improvement over last week when it was cold.

Also, installed an infinity basslink in the trunk. Got it for 170 and it has plenty of bass for what I want and blends in very well with the factory HK system.

Edit: Actually, apparently Infinity is a Harman Kardon brand. Didn't realize that.

Seems like I've got an electrical gremlin hiding somewhere. One of the fuses for the central locking system has blown twice in the last week. This is going to be fun to track down.

Most likely culprit seems to be the wires going into the trunk lid. I'll check that out when I get a chance.

My neighbor was running this issue down on his E46. He had some split wires right at the hinge of the trunk that were shorting out and screwing everything up. Definitely the first place to look. Should be a relatively easy fix.

Trunk lid wiring looks good. I've pinpointed the problem though. It pops fuse 7 when I put the drivers side window down more than a certain amount. I'm going to have to tear the door panel off at some point and see if I can figure out what's going on at that point.

It's a wild guess, but I'm going to guess that the two white window clips ($4 each) that hold the window to the regulator are not sliding smoothly on the track, they provide too much resistance to the motor past a certain point and that makes something pop.

Take the door panel off and grease the shit out of the track that those white clips ride in.

Maybe window wire got caught in regulator and regulator gear teeth touch bare wire at some point shorting it out. :dunno: but sounded good

I don't think bad clips can cause a fuse to pop, it will just stop the window if it senses too much resistance, and if you hold the switch down it will run through the resistance or just grind to a pathetic halt. Something has to be pinched and shorting out in there, hopefully it's not too bad to run down.

On the plus side removing the panel is about as easy as it gets.

Update to the window popping fuses situation. The warm weather has fixed it. Another win for procrastinating on fixing stuff. I'm guessing it will come back next winter, but I probably won't own the car at that point.

Another random glitch I had was it threw a code for the catalytic converter once. I reset it and it hasn't come back. That has been a few weeks now so who knows if it will.
