ok someone tell me what happened at the Daytona 500

I don't care enough to spend more time searching for the answer, but I'd like to know! I see a couple videos, but not much explanation as to what happened and what the results were.

Is this correct?:
Track was wet, cars under caution, he came out of the pits with some kind of problem, tried to haul ass to catch the pack, lost control and hit the jet dryer?

How does that not result in Montoya's immediate ejection from all motorsport forever? Is it typical and ok to go hauling ass past stopped track workers or EV in this event in the name of catching the pack... the pack that is creeping around the track behind a pace car? I must be missing something. Seems like all the blurbs I see about it are just like, wow, that was a crazy accident with no-one to blame! :dunno:

best video i've seen so far:

he blew a tire and looped it into the truck. i'm not sure how this is any different than having EV/Wreckers out on a hot track during a track day. it wasn't like the dryer truck was in the race line...and i don't think he was that close to the pack. by the time he caught up it may very well have went green.

i hate JPM, but i don't think there's much to be made of the situation except for "that was crazy"

First, I heard he broke a linkage but a blown tire could work as well. My theory is that he was tired of going in circles and then stopping when it drizzled and then continuing the never ending gauntlet of circle after circle that he said fuck it, and found the slowest moving object with the most explosive fuel and rammed that bitch.

In all seriousness thought, the reason he was going so fast is that his transmission got stuck and he couldn't shift so he came into the pits.

Well at this point the pace car was rounding the track about to come down the straight. So JPM did what any repectable NASCAR driver would do and told his crew to just get him the high gear.

The Pace car had just passed the line when JPM yelled back to his crew chief and said you gotta get me out in front of that pace car...well they released him and it was a race to the end of pit lane.

He beat the pace car by a nose and proceeded to try and catch the pack...his goal you ask...to be at full speed when he caught the pack and the green dropped.

Well that damn jet dryer blew some piece of ungodly metal (what type of racing organization is this, carbon fiber is found in children toys at this point) in his path and he blew a tire and hit the jet dryer.

Yes, completely typical to catch up with the pack, he wasn't moving that fast really. But in any oval racing, you're going to see cars catching up with the pack moving pretty fast. He was trying to get back to the pits as fast as possible to not go a lap down since he had a vibration.

In all reality, I don't see where he did anything other than nail it on some oil dry and spun out, which is stupid, but not out of the realm of possibility on that type of track. They said something broke, that they saw sparks under his car, but at most speedways the chassis drags the track anyway, so in my opinion he just spun himself out.

Never thougt about it before, but it's actually kind of unsafe to have 200 gallons of jet fuel near anything moving that could even potentially crash into it.

Just to note, if you listen to the "Officals" channel ona scanner at a NASCAR race, they tell the cars exactly where to go under caution, such as "42 car go under track dryer on turn 3, stay low." They have communications with the teams, so if they wanted him to slow down for EVs, they would have told him

Also, as far as I know, NASCAR rules state (and most other oval series) that starts and restarts are nose-to-tail, so that almost tells someone to catch up as fast as possible.

Just to let you know, when a double yellow goes out, at NASA we are told to catch up as quickly as possible to the field. I don't see how this was any different. Although we are warned extensively about being ginger around the EV crowd which to me looked like he was, but somehow he lost control. You can see something scrape/break and then he actually counters it, but it wasnt enough and the car went sideways.

Looks like they are working toward installing roll bars and fire extinguishers in jet dryer trucks, plus they'll be required to wear helmets and fire suits (which makes me wonder why they didn't have this before).
