WTB: Diesel truck
#1
I am pretty much looking to buy a diesel truck. Here are some guidelines

Price: $10,000 or less
Miles: 200,000 or less

Make: Open to anything
Year Model: 95+
Turbo: yes pls
Dual Rear Wheels: nope
Extended cab: Yes, or crew cab
4x4: Yes

It seems like I can't find exactly the combination I am looking for. One 7.3 F250 I found had everything except 270k miles, which makes me a little nervous, even though it's probably alright for as little as I'll use it..and it was $6200 bucks

I'm a chevy guy, but damn, you just can't hardly find a duramax truck from the low 2000's that would be required to put it in my price range

There are a ton of Newer model fords out there approaching the price range, but that 6l diesel blows

I don't really like dodges all that much, but if a 12V cummins made an appearance somewhere, I'd consider it.

My dad might want to sell his, if you're really interested. ?97? Chevy with 6.5TD, 4WD. He's also got a dump bed in it, (a drop-in Maxidump) I don't know if you're interested in that.

Hrmm - do you know how those drop-ins are mounted? Has it basically ruined the regular bed?

I'd be interested if you can give me some more details. Was it a work truck? I'd prefer to find one that wasn't a W/T because those had like no options, and usually crappy bench seats and whatnot.

No, it wasn't a work truck, and I am pretty sure you can just take the dump bed out of the regular bed. I think it has power windows and shit but it is a truck.

Well maybe check and see if he's interested, has some maintenance history and whatnot. Those pre-duramax didnt have the best reputation. Some of those also had low "official" tow ratings, but I'm still doing my research to find out exactly how much they can pull, etc..

Dad bought it used last year, so it won't have any records beyond what he's done.

Call me.
2002 GMC Sierra Crew Cab, Duramax, Allison Trans, over your 200K miles at 235 but still runs awesome. It is a DRW 4x4. whatcha got against duallies?

or I know of an old Ford 7.3 turbo diesel SRW 350. Think its a crew cab but may be extended cab.

Might have an F350 Crew, 8ft bed, single wheel. 55k on the clock. Only problem is the 460 GAS motor. I just thought I would toss it up. $6,000.

Don't hate too much on the 6.0L. I'm def. not a Ford guy, but as long as you don't get an '03 the 6.0L is a good motor. The '03s had their problems but most were resolved in the '04+ models. It's faster and a more steady towing platform than the 7.3. If it's gonna be your daily then the 7.3 is def. the way to go, but for not-all-the-time use the 6.0L could be a great choice.

6.0L sucks bawls son. I visited a big Ford dealer not to long ago to get some warranty work done on a Fusion I traded and they had 3 trucks in there getting the head bolts done. Cabs OFF! I couldn't believe it. They actaully lift the cab off the truck to do the work. Anyway, he said it has just been horrible for them and they had more around the back waiting. The head bolts alone were $500.

I have two problems with duallies - 1) 6 tires to buy instead of 4 and 2) Pain in the ass to park and whatnot and 3) I assume they get less mileage, not sure

If it's a heck of a deal, you know, i'd consider it at least

more details on the 350 if you got them

Yeah - this is the kind of stories I had heard from people on the internet, and personally known a couple in real life. Pretty much scares me off those...I hadnt heard that about them being improved after 2003, but the one guy I know had an '04 that needed injectors right off the bat

If you get a 7.3L plug that shit in the second it gets below freezing. My dad bought one almost new back in 2000 and its been pretty much completely faithful for the past 11 years and 130k miles, but that bitch cannot and will not cold start if it gets too cold. The glow plugs just aren't enough to get the juices flowing.

Ours pretty much fits the bill of what you're looking for, 6ft bed, crew cab, 130k miles, 7.3L, 4 speed auto, and it has the gooseneck hideaway hitch and a bumper hitch. I don't know what packages they had but it has a few options and cloth seats. I don't think he's selling it anytime soon though, we're pretty attached to it.
Now: 07 Porsche Cayman S | 18 VW Tiguan

Then: 18 VW GTI Autobahn | 95 BMW M3 | 15 VW GTI SE | 12 Kia Optima SX | 2009 VW GTI | 00 BMW 540i Sport | 90 Mazda Miata | 94 Yamaha FZR600R | 1993 Suzuki GS500E | 2003 BMW 325i | 95 Saab 900S

Still looking here. I have decided that I pretty much do like the old body style F250s , but every asshole within 500 miles of here wants about 40% more for their 270k mile truck than its worth. Meanwhile, this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-F-250-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZalgoQ3dLVIQ26ituQ3dUCIQ26otnQ3d5Q26poQ3dLVIQ26psQ3d63Q26clkidQ3d2411689886302985222QQ_trksidZp5197Q2em7QQitemZ270806175681

is out there, and at a reasonable price. Also http://york.craigslist.org/cto/2564906845.html

Which is why I cant figure out why these VA people want 10grand for some POS. Maybe that is building in for CL lowballs?

Lol. If you are going back that far you better just get yourself a 12v Cummins.

I disagree. While plugging it in will certainly make it start easy, it will start just fine if you cycle the glow plugs a few times. I only drive my truck a few times a month and in the coldest days of the winter it has not given me any problems with starting when I needed it.
I wouldn't be afraid of a high-mileage 7.3, or a lower mileage 6.0 if I was going to drive it only a few times a month. Yeah, they've had a lot of issues, but if you get one that has the records of it previously being done then there's a pretty good chance you won't have to worry about it. And the 6.0 seems to get much better MPGs while being quieter and smoother...

Why do people want the 12v over the 24?

In my first post I said I'd be open to a cummins..but it seems like those 12v are harder to find even more than a powerstroke. It seems like most of the duramax trucks are too new to be under 10 grand, so that's why I had kind of settled on the old body style fords. I actually prefer the old body style to the 99-03 style.
