What cars from the last 20 years will be collectibles?
#1
Jay Leno did an article in Pop Mech on the subject: http://www.popularmechanics.com/automot ... 12877.html

I don't know that stuff like the Taurus will ever be collectible but he's right about Ferraris...

Just off the top of mind I think some cars that we know that will be collectible are:

-Integra Type-R
-E30 M3
-4th Gen Supra
-NSX
-FD RX-7
-Lotus Exige/Elise
-Viper
-S2000

I think the first 4 are already starting to go up in value, the last ones will take awhile. Either way I don't plan on collecting cars anytime soon because it wastes too much space. I am however hoping I can get my hands on a mint RC30 one of these days...

So what is your list of collectibles?

He's absolutely right about the Miata. Back in '89, people were paying thousands more than MSRP just to get the sportscar that wasnt always in the shop. I think the S2000 will also be on that list, just much much later.

E30 M3 is already a collectible, I saw one sell at the Barrett Jackson go for a nice chunk of change. (kind of regret not buying a friend's for $5k last year)

I dont think the S2000 will be a collectible for a long time just out of sheer production volume, same with the miata.

ITR might be a 'niche' collectible, but I dont think its really going to be a universal collectible (like the muscle cars are now) WRX is in the same boat, its a 'first' in a lot of ways and innovative but still doesnt really stand out in time.

I definately think Ill be restoring a 99 miata when Im 60.....

Id add C5/6 Z06, Solstice, Insight, Mini, 135, maybe Smart Car

Yeah I'd say definitely the Mazdaspeed Miata. Also the Club Sport Miata since there weren't a lot of those.

probably cheaper in the long run to buy one now and store it properly.

I think the cars that had the higher production volumes will take a lot longer to become collectible but will get there eventually. With the Miata there were at least a few special editions so those will be hard to get a hold of.

So the next question is, if you could only keep one 'collectible' in the garage, what would it be?

Me:

1. Zanardi Edition NSX
2. FD RX-7

My problem would be that I would want to be driving them fairly often.

how about the VW Phaeton or the W8 Passat? they're silly rare but don't really stand out except to a niche of German car nuts. however, they were a big leap for a "people's car" company at the time.

I should rephrase: the limited edition 06 models. Any car that has a specific number in the production run is going to probably be pretty collectible some day.

Probably a lot of recent/current domestic muscle. These are some I can think of off the top of my head

Mustangs:
Shelby GT/GT-H Mustangs
'00 Cobra R
'03-'04 Termi
Saleen Parnelli Jones SpEd
'08 Bullitt
Roush P51R
Factory Drag Pak Mustangs
Saleen S281/S351 Mustangs

Camaro SS/Firebird Trans Ams
-35th Anniversary
-Firehawk/SLP-prepared 4th gens
-GMMG Camaro
-Berger Camaro
-Upcoming Camaro variants

And the usual Corvettes, 50th Anniversary, Z06's, ZR1's, perhaps Callaway/Lingenfelter variants.

Vipers - GTS-R, ACR, SRT10 ACR. Current SRT8 Challengers too.

The Ford GT/GTX-1 I see becoming highly collectible, perhaps the Mercury Marauder to some extent.

Its hard to judge Japanese cars in terms of collectivity. I doubt we'll ever see them on the scale of Barrett Jackson and other big name auction houses going for hundreds of thousands or more. I think they'll remain a niche collectible wherein certain people will pay top dollar for them, but they won't be regarded as collectible on the whole, at least here in America.
