You can use the component connection to get 720p or 1080i on your HDTV or the HDMI to get 1080p. Not all HDTVs support 1080p.

Component WILL carry 1080p, it's up to the TV if it supports it or not. Only useful thing about HDMI is it carrys Video and digital Audio in one cable, other than that, they suck.
