So much for my New Year's Resolution to have another crash free year.

About two months ago I could put off replacing my tires for no longer, as there was a strip of cord showing on my rear tire. I stopped riding for a few weeks, but rode to work a couple of days about two weeks ago since the weather was so nice (although I actually ended up riding in the wet, twice). I managed to avoid crashing then, so I figured I had dodge a bullet when I put my new tires on.

First day out, 1 block from the house I was pulling out onto Route 7. An excessive application of the throttle resulted in the back end stepping waayyyyy out. I shut it off and the bike went the other way into a lowside. I didn't even hit the ground hard enough or fast enough to scuff any of my clothes (I had all my gear on) but my frame sliders got a little meat taken out of them.

I decided since neither the bike or I were damaged that I would just continue on my way to work.

Lesson learned? Tip toe around turns while the brand new coating is still on the tires. The bike stepped out stupid fast under what was a normal application of throttle.

I feel kind of bad that I couldn't save it, after all I did a dirt track school specifically so I could control slides. But I just wasn't expecting a slide at all with so little throttle. When I've been trying to spin up the rear on the power I haven't done too badly.

At least I got the crash out of the way, and I'll remember the lesson for the next time I'm on new tires...

Yeah that was the first time I laid it down on the street due to my own stupidity. Going down at like jogging speed isn't so bad though.

Hahaha, yeah the word highside gets so much more interest than lowside. It actually should have been a highside but I think the lack of grip allowed the bike to go all the way around the other way rather than hooking up and spitting me off.

Apparently there is a coating used on tires so that they don't stick to the mold, but it seems like tire manufacturers have started phasing that out of late. I've seen a couple of articles that say you should run the tires in for the first 80 to 100 miles because they're not heat cycled or something like that.

i remember when i had brand new tires on and they were squirmish around turns in general. i almost slid out around a turn under too much throttle as well, but i think that was mainly b/c of the tires being cold (felt the twitch, rolled off, and took my feet off the pegs)

Glad to see you were ok! I will admit i freaked when i read high side... asshole!

you need to take new tires out in the dry and treat them like you are riding in the rain. Thank God i can only spin up the fzr in the rain, when i'm ready for it

Yeah that's exactly what it was like, riding in the rain. If I had thought of it that way turned on my rain traction control setting before I left the house =P.

with new tires, i like to try and ride for about a few miles straight to heat them up somewhat, then slowly start putting some lean on them to scrub off that crap.
