My favorite Mac Apps
#1
Since a few people on here are Mac owners, and some soon will be, I figured I'd share a list I sent a recent Mac convert after he got his MacBook.

VirtueDesktops - Lets you have as many "virtual desktops" as you want and you can flip through them. Great for doing work on one "desktop"... you push the flip key combo, and you flip over to your IM desktop. Great to combo with Parallels. Also, being replaced by "Spaces" in new OSX due out in a month or two.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://virtuedesktops.info/index.php/downloads/">http://virtuedesktops.info/index.php/downloads/</a><!-- m -->

Quicksilver - Super duper application launcher... It keeps crap out of your dock. Just hit the key and start typing the app name like "fire" and you hit enter and bam... firefox opens up.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/">http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/</a><!-- m -->

High Priority - Great little to do list that sits in your menu bar
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.kudurshian.net/highpriority/">http://www.kudurshian.net/highpriority/</a><!-- m -->

Sizzling Keys - Lets you access iTunes functions from anywhere via hotkeys so if you're typing a document and want to skip to the next song, you just hit a key combo and go to the next song
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/">http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/</a><!-- m -->

Adium - Best AIM/MSN/Yahoo/Gtalk/whatever client for mac
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.adiumx.com/">http://www.adiumx.com/</a><!-- m -->

Alarm Clock - Very simple, easy to use alarm clock app. Very basic and does the job. It'll wake the computer up from sleep to wake you up too. Alarms can be itunes songs too.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/">http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/</a><!-- m -->

AppFresh - Like software update for mac, but updates all of your apps at once.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://metaquark.de/appfresh/">http://metaquark.de/appfresh/</a><!-- m -->

appzapper - mac uninstaller program - removes all the crap that some programs leave behinds
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://appzapper.com/">http://appzapper.com/</a><!-- m -->

Handbrake - rip movies
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://handbrake.m0k.org/">http://handbrake.m0k.org/</a><!-- m -->

Connoisseur - mac recipe cataloging program
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/application.php?app=Connoisseur">http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/appl ... onnoisseur</a><!-- m -->

ImageWell - great for just resizing photos quickly before you email them or facebook them... just quick and dirty instead of PS
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html">http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html</a><!-- m -->

iTunesShut - automatically shuts your computer down after playing music. good for falling asleep to music
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/itunesshut.html">http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/i ... sshut.html</a><!-- m -->

Miro - One of the best things ever. Seriously. Download it. I'll show you how to use it next time I'm in SC if you have trouble. It's pretty straight forward though. It's an RSS reader/Torrent downloader. So, you can get a torrent RSS feed of your favorite TV show... say man vs wild.. plug it into Miro and every time a new episode comes out, you get it. Like Tivo for your computer.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.getmiro.com/">http://www.getmiro.com/</a><!-- m -->
Pair with: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tvrss.net/shows/">http://www.tvrss.net/shows/</a><!-- m -->
NOTE: ALSO FOR WINDOWS

Firefox - great browser... of course
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/">http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/</a><!-- m -->

Transmission - good bittorrent client for mac
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://transmission.m0k.org/">http://transmission.m0k.org/</a><!-- m -->

VLC - the everything video player
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html">http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html</a><!-- m -->

I totally forgot about iConcertCal. It's a "visualizer" for iTunes that shows you which of your iTunes artists is playing a concert near you.

Do you prefer Fusion over parallels? I tried it and found it lacked a lot of features. Parallels' cohesion is no match for fusion's unity or whatever. That's the only thing i liked more.

I haven't used parallels so I have no basis for comparison. When I get a free "research day" here, I'll take a look.

So Jack, I got Miro and say I want to download all new Daily Show episodes... I'm here (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://tvrss.net/search/?show_name=The+Daily+Show&show_name_exact=true">http://tvrss.net/search/?show_name=The+ ... exact=true</a><!-- m -->), but what do I plug in to Miro to subscribe?

Mike, first, select just one release group. VTV seems to release the episodes slightly faster. Then, right click the "Search based RSS feed link" and copy that link. In Miro, create a new channel. It'll automatically paste the RSS link in there.

Then Miro reads the RSS feed every hour and picks up new episodes for you. Every morning, you'll have the Daily Show from the night before!

Which reminds me of another app, Jing. It takes screenshots and screen casts and uploads them to a free server. It's all free!

No fallout for Mac.

No. It's too fucking awesome. Steampunk System Shock 2 is something Mac "gamers" would cream themselves over.

I was gonna say EVE:Online, but the mac client is coming soon, and nobody here plays it anyway.

So whatever. Carry on with your computer equivalent of a Miata.
