Why is a busted old cat worth $200?

Someone PLEASE explain to me why people can sell a busted old cat on eBay or the forums I'm on for ~$200? How on earth is it worth more as scrap than a new generic cat would cost?

THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE

Also I feel like a dolt because I left mine with the muffler shop that built up my 318's straight exhaust... little did I know it would have paid for the damn exhaust! :dunno:

they have a bit of platinum in them... thefts are not uncommon.

ok. Geniuses. I know they have platinum in them. But so do new cats.... right? And you can buy a generic fit Catco or Magnflow cat for as little as $60. Do they use WAY less platinum and OE cats have like a ton of it in there?

I'm not! There's like, people that buy these things regularly for salvage. I'm guessing they wouldn't bother if they were just losing money like crazy on the deals.

It probably has something to do with the amounts - I know cats have other things in them too like Palladium - maybe platinum was used more in older cats?

afterarket "cheap" cats have different amounts of the rare metals (typically less). OEM cats have lots of the goods. i guess that might mean that aftermarket cats won't function as well for as long?

I've been told that most aftermarket cats don't clean very well, and the post cat 02 sensor will turn the check engine light on, even if its new.

I'm not sure about that, we pretty much only deal with the $1500 Toyota cats when replacing them, and its rare that theres a problem with the converters anyway.

But yeah, platinum and palladium.
