Seems like a ridiculous steal for a little dent and a torn seat. I emailed him and he said the tires and brakes are good, and he has a clean title in hand. I asked him if I could go check it out tomorrow. I don't even get my license until the weekend of the 11th, but I'd hate to miss a steal like this.
Thoughts, warnings?

Not really a 'steal' - avg buy at best

Huh,
Every other ZX6 I've seen in that year range is listed for $2-$3k.

Ripped seat, dented tank, faded paint, 15 year old 600. If someone paid $2-3k for that...

rj, you know it takes a lot for something to go for less than 2k. it's certainly not a steal, but also not a rip.

$3k for that bike would be a rip.

Obviously the ones I had seen going for 3k were in "ready to go condition. There isn't exactly a market of faded black 1997 CBRs with 2 tears in the seat and two dents in the tank on which to base my observations.
Yes, if someone paid 3k for that bike it would be crazy, but for me, someone who can do all of the paintwork by himself fo' free. And a couple hundred bucks for a seat, it seemed like a killer deal.
No matter, i was second in line to see it, and the first guy bought it this morning.

If you're looking to spend $3k there's better bikes out there. The odds and ends add up fast on an old bike thats been around the block like a $2 whore, chances are no one's had it long enough to really look after it - forks, shock, brakes, tires, chain/sprockets, carbs - probably all need attention. This is just a general observation from buying and selling a bunch of older bikes.

Werd. I'm actually giving my buddy at work's 99 CBR600F4 *serious* consideration for 2k.. If i go to look at others ill bring you for sure.
Im taking the class on the 11th to actually get my license, and unless I find a complete steal and get my dad to float me the cash, I'm gonna wait for a couple paychecks at any rate. Which will coincidentally be that week. I might be buzzin around on a CBR, hehe.

Mmmmkay.
I found a little '93 GS500 a couple hours from me that I have a big huge soft spot for. Its a little frankenbike with a katana front end (giving it 2 front brakes) and a custom subframe tidying up the rear end. $1400 buys me the bike with the mystery motor in it, and a spare motor with paperwork from a 2005. Whatcha think?

I think Adam will come down with me and test ride it for me to make sure it goes in a straight line since its so modded and I wont have my license until the 13th.
Normally I'd be scared to buy anything uber modded, but this guy and I have freakishly similar tastes, like if I bought a stock GS500, eventually I'd morph it into something that resembled this. I can just sorta pick up where this guy is leaving off and finish her up.

that's pretty cool. don't think you can go too wrong for $1400 assuming the spare motor is quality.

I'm pretty excited about it.
My criteria for when I go to check it out next weekend will be:
Does it ride down the road straight?
Do I, or Can I with reasonable modification, actually fit on it?
If it meets those two she's mine. 8-)

those are nice case guards, they don't make those any more. Seems like a good price if that's what you're looking for

Deal revised. $1000 gets me the bike with the running/driving mystery motor. If it all checks out she's mine.
My plan is to rock it as is for the first few weeks and see how it does, and have some people check it out, have my buddy from work help me take it apart and inspect. I'll either try and tune the motor up (if needed) or replace it (if needed). Maybe ill just rock it indefinitely, but if that little motors track days show up in some form, I'll just drop the $300 i would've spent on a sub 10k mile replacement motor and pop it in. Apparently you can do it in like 90 minutes.
Stay tuned fools. If there aren't any ugly surprises, I'll have her in my garage. If so, I'll be high tailing it home to tell you guys about it.
