so here is the situation guys
Ill be traveling in southeast asia for a bit and then heading over to Ireland for a week or so.
I've found myself with up to 5 or 6 days to get from bangkok to dublin, do you guys have any suggestions on some place to go for those days, perferably "on the way" to Ireland.
I'm thinking Madrid or Barcelona would be nice to see, maybe Paris, but i'm open for any other options
dubai? i'd never go there on its own, but it's pretty much on the way so it might be a nice excuse. save europe for when you really have the time to do it right... i would not suggest anywhere in northernish europe right now..

Prague?

Turkey is amazing (I was there for 2 weeks back in 2000), but don't short-change it with a stay of only a few days. Istanbul is just another large city - the real jewels of the country are spread elsewhere.
I loved Prague when I lived there, but when I went back in 07, there were simply way too many tourists. It would be a good stop for 3-4 days though, despite the imminent weather crappiness that may await you.
If you're already in SE Asia, why not stay in Thailand or go to Vietnam?
Are you not confined to using certain airlines, or do you pretty much have free reign? The connection possibilities will impact your decision greatly (i.e. hubs for many of the carriers being Dubai, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, etc)...

Prague in the snow is friggin amazing though - but many times it'll just be a cold rain and be overcast.

My list of places I'd go...
Singapore - a bit in the wrong direction but more than worth it, especially if you're in the region. Fantastic, amazing place where so many cultures mix in such a modern, clean island environment. I really couldn't recommend it highly enough.
Muscat, Oman - rugged and historic in an Indiana Jones sense; traditional culture but westernized beautifully; most speak English, beautiful resort hotels, great weather. Amazing waters if you swim/dive/snorkel. They're just recently getting into the Dubai-style swing of construction and lavishness but there is still a lot left untouched.
Dubai - cool place, but a bit exhausting after a while as it all got a bit old quick for me. Abu Dhabi is more tasteful I hear, but I haven't been.
I'll agree that Europe is deserving of a solid week or two, but I could recommend more there. Lisbon, Portugal....London, Paris, French Riviera region (Nice, St. Tropez and Monaco), etc. Paris and London will be expensive no matter how you cut it. Rural France can be done for less, even in the south. I've always wanted to see eastern Europe and Scandinavia (particularly Stockholm) as well.
hmm some good thoughts here, Dubai could be really interesting actually and I agree, I would never go there on its own, but as a stop for a day or two it could be fun.
Turkey does sound interesting as well, one of those places I wouldn't really think of visiting. My only real concern would be weather, I won't be really equiped to deal with snow/freezing cold.
My southeast asia book includes singapore so I'll have to look into that area a bit more seriously too.
Thanks for the suggestions
