I think something died in my car!
#1
So seriously, I think something crawled inside my heating vents and died. It's starting to get cold up here and turning on the heat causes everyone in the car to instantly vomit. It's quite gross. Have any of you guys ever had this happen before? I'm about to set the car on fire and claim the insurance money.

If you guys have any great ideas for finding the location of the vermin, let me know. Otherwise give me suggestions on setting "accidental" fires.

Happens all the time.

We have a car come in every couple weeks with a dead rodent in the heater case or blower motor.

+1 on the frigi fresh if its not something dead.

I need to go carcass hunting pretty soon, I'm going on a big road trip starting friday and I'd appreciate not arriving at a wedding in Delaware smelling like dead rotting mouse. It smells for heat and A/C, do you think that suggests the blower motor more than anything else?

I'll remember that stuff if I can't find any small critters, but the smell seems to be of the dead creature variety and getting more intense by the day.

Generally, if theres a dead animal in your blower motor it will be really loud when you turn it on, due to the motor being off balance, or chopping up squeaky the mouse.

Other than that, I can't really tell you where to look, because it could get anywhere in the ducts, heater case, etc.

Start by smelling each vent seperately, if you find one that's stronger than the rest, it might be there. If they are all the same, dig into the airbox!

Well I found it last night... dead mouse in the blower. Although it's more accurate to say multiple pieces of dead mouse in the blower. I knew it as soon as I opened up the blower. The smell was so strong I literally puked in the driveway, I'm not even kidding. Possibly the worst thing I've ever smelled in my life.

The puking was my fault though. I had a sweatshirt wrapped around my face to shield me from the odor, but I couldn't smell anything through it at first so I thought I should take it off an take a big wiff to make sure I actually found the source of the smell. So really, I'm a total dumbass.

Anyway, I removed the blower and its casing, scrubbed them down (with a mask), and soaked them overnight in antibacterial chemical crap. So when I get home today I'll be able to reinstall everything.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I might still track down some of the stuff that Evan recommended in case there's any left over bad smells floating around in vents.

Good!

I had to my own vermin removal earlier this year. Got in the car to move it and saw three run from the dash to under the passenger seat. Freaked me out...

One that was caught in a trap sat for 2 days under the seat and it was bad, I can't imagine the smell you had.
