could use some computer help
#1
we have some smart guys on here so i figured i'd ask. i'm typing this from my wife's computer.

long story short -- building hit by lightning last tuesday, killed modem, router, and the power source on my computer. everything else ok. i fixed or replaced everything and reformatted my computer. now my computer is showing "network cable unplugged" and the damn thing could not be more plugged in. Jen's works just like always. our setup is as follows:

interwebs --> cable modem --> router (wireless, but we're using wires right now) --> Jens computer/my computer.

i'm using XP, and my networking controller is an Nvidia Nforce MCP. the device status says "working properly"

i have installed all the drivers for my computer (friends helped me build it in '03 and i have the drivers for the motherboard), tested all of the ethernet cables, and tried hooking the modem straight up to my computer. upon trying to install the router software onto my computer it says "no wired adapter detected". the router shows no connection in the port that my computer hooks up to.

i'm at a loss. i suck at computers as it is, and unfortunately i don't room with any comp-sci people like i used to at JMU. i'd really like to get my internet back Sad

edit: also i have another copy of XP (both are legit  ) should i reformat again and install that copy instead?

this actually happened to my mom's computer (my old Dell) with the wireless network card - i'm considering replacing it. i think a new wireless card would be less than $30

The network card might have gone bad?

you said you tried hooking the computer straight to the modem... what was the result of that? if that also didn't work, your NIC is fried.

ah i forgot to mention that in better detail. when i hooked the modem straight up to the computer, the modem did not recognize a connection and my computer stayed the same.

can you replace an NIC individually or will this require a new motherboard? it looks like whatever the cable hooks up to in my computer is integral to the board.

you can buy a card and ignore what seems to be the dead built-in one on your motherboard. if that doesn't solve the problem, you shouldn't have any trouble returning it.

disabling the onboard card might help to avoid confusion as you trouble shoot the new NIC card.

Sounds like the NIC is dead (or disabled).

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
