Light Gray / White Smoke out of Exhaust

well, it's not the fuel pump. I hot wired it straight to the battery and it started without an issue.

alright, so in checking the oil....

I ran the bike for 5 minutes... let it sit for a little.... took an oil measurement

it measured all the way up to the end of the dipstick... and by end... I mean like the handle.

I'm guessing... that's too much, and the reason that's a guess, is because that's a good 3 inches of oil more than the max line.

I guess the trick will be to drop a fair amount of the oil out of the bike so I get it down to the correct amount?

Thanks,
Drew

different problem actually... the oil... has a much thinner consistency than you normally would find, and smells a lot like gas.

if I'm not mistaken... that would be a big problem.

Change your oil first, then start to worry.

Is there ever a scenario when you don't jump straight to the out of the ordinary, most unlikely, off the wall problem as being what you're dealing with?

When you've got a lot more oil in the engine than there should be, all bets are off. Change the oil. Put the proper amount in. Then start trouble shooting (if there's even a problem left). You can't make an educated guess about nature of your problem without ensuring that the basis are done right.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

PGK Wrote:It sounds like you have a serious motor issue if it's losing power at high rpm and blowing a lot of smoke.

change the oil and filter. Inspect the oil for any debris, if it smells burnt, etc.
do a compression test and a leakdown test. These two tests are the basic tests for engine problem diagnosis.

Smoke is not indicative of a carb problem.

Change your oil, and filter. Do a compression test. Do a leakdown test. Then we will know what the problem is and can properly troubleshoot. Like ASteele said, throwing out hypothesis about systems you don't understand will not fix a problem you can't diagnose.

wow, no reason to jump down my throat over that. It just seems like a bad thing to have gas in your oil so I assumed the worst - and I'm angry that I didn't catch that earlier. I know that the previous owner had changed the oil and oil filter before I purchased it - about 3 weeks ago, and was running fine until the bike fell over, and/or I actually started to use the throttle to get to the high rpms and unlocked the smoke issue.

I'll be changing the oil tomorrow, so I'll know more after that and take it for a ride. Thank you all for helping out even if I immediately jump to the worst.

Try and measure how much oil comes out.

Hey All,

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this dealio. I just recently went into contract to purchase a townhouse in kingstowne alexandria so that's been taking up my time as well as finding myself in the hospital due to a recent crohns flare up.

I changed the oil two weekends ago and out of a oil pan that's supposed to have 3.5 quarts or so I drained out probably a little over 9qts of oil and gas. The coolant levels look fine and have been stable throughout this whole deal.

I was playing around with the bike just to see if I could get it working again. It looks like there was a little crimp in one of the hoses leading from the tank (a pretty small hose that leads nowhere - I'm assuming so air can get in the tank) after unclenching that hose, it starts up relatively well. When you add gas to it, the whole thing just stalls out.

The answer to a bunch of the questions is that I haven't gotten a chance to take a look at the spark plugs, or the carbs yet and will do that probably in the future when time becomes a commodity that I have again.

Also if any of you know, during the process of playing aorund trying to get the bike to run again, we inadvertently unscrewed the idle modifyer wire from wherever it connects to the engine/carb system and for the life of me I can't find where the damn thing actually connected into. Any one have any idea? The Haynes manual just shows the obvious portion that it hangs on the hook on the frame. I'm looking for the little tiny hole that it screws into.

Thanks for all your help guys and I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their projects for the summer.
