This is clearly a correllation not a direct causation.
I'm saying that correlation != causation. Is there a link between mental illness and drug abuse? Sure, there is a link. But that link is poorly understood and to imply that
is not scientifically sound, and really isn't supported by alot of the data.
But there has been causality shown between taking drugs (some more than others) before developing any mental illness especially in the formative years. Genetics, of course is a major contributor as well.
straight from the first google hit on the subject from the National Drug Intelligence Center.

Quote:In other cases mental disorders are caused by drug abuse. For example, MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy), produces long-term deficits in serotonin function in the brain, leading to mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Chronic drug abuse by adolescents during formative years is a particular concern because it can interfere with normal socialization and cognitive development and thus frequently contributes to the development of mental disorders.(btw DMT is a relative of LSD)
Im curious about your education and training on mental health, because on this subject I defer to people more educated than I, like a ex-gf (and friend) who has a BS in Psych, masters in psych, and is currently working on her PhD who told me most of this, and Lee also agrees. Not claiming lack of education automatically makes you wrong (but maybe you were a psych major i have no idea) especially in the information age, Im just curious where you get your opinions and thoughts on the subject.
Quote:But don't say drug abuse leads to mental illness, because it don't. And here we have the crux of the problem. Rex either sucks at reading or just loves to manipulate what others say. I never claimed or even insinuated that doing drugs would put you on the sure fire path to mental illness. Here let me quote what I wrote before

Evan Wrote:mentally ill (especially schizophrenia) are greatly attributed by drug abuse.
and again ill defer to the above quote that supports drugs putting you at higher risk for mental illness. (shit, they came out and went farther than Idid "In other cases mental disorders are caused by drug abuse", maybe you can send them an email and tell them they are wrong?)
does it directly cause mental illness in every case? of course not, I expect you have the intelligence to not jump to that conclusion, as well as know that this is not (hopefully?) applied to FDA approved drugs. Does it substantially increase your risk? Absolutely. Do the studies conclusively come to this conclusion? You betcha.
