STi Weight
#1
So I got a chance to weight the Subaru today and was suprised by the reading which was 3,180 lbs with about 1/3 a tank of gas and everything that is apart of the car in the car.

For some reason I thought these cars were pushing 3300+ but according to edmunds the curb weight of an 04 STi is 3,263 lbs.

That's pretty much the entire story...car weighs less than I thought it did and that makes me kind of happy.

Drive on from west Texas to Nebraska tomorrow so you know I'll be giving her a workout.

PS: Any of you guys had your current/former STi's on the scale?

Nice, that's lower than I thought too! I wonder if the engine is lighter than stock after all of the work that was done to it. It's probably shaved off some more weight with the light exhaust it has too. Was that with you in the driver's seat too, or without?

I've heard the weights on these cars are quite a bit overrated and are based on having FULL fluids. There must be some weight loss with the engine but the scale reading is probably pretty accurate with the not full tank and probably other random bits that are now gone from the car with the work done to it.

I've been keeping up with a project on IWSTI.com where a guy has gotten his STi down to ~2700 lbs through removing extra pieces and swapping out for lightweight parts. Pretty amazing.

Ah man that's a lot of weight reduction! That's when you're doing stuff like taking up the carpet, heating up the noise-reduction tar on the frame and scraping it out by hand.... FUCK that! ha ha

Hes got a full spec sheet of everything hes taken off the car and weighed... random bolts, all sorts of the things that I wouldn't really feel right about voiding from the car but seems to be working. These cars come from the factory with very little sound deadening so it has to be made up in other ways... he also limits fluids and replaces more often... but I'd imagine this car with 600 less lbs would be a whole lot of fun. Did he strip the whole interior, do Lexan windows, etc.? I mean if you wanted to turn the STi into a racecar you certainly could... there are a lot of luxuries that you could remove to lose some serious weight.

He seems to be trying to keep it still daily driver for now... not really sure what the final outcome is supposed to be. Still pretty neat to see how much 1/4 lb parts add up into a pretty heavy ass car in the long run.

Heres the link to his thread if you are interested on reading up on it: He considers it a "full interior" car at that weight. Pretty impressive.

i didn't read through that guy's entire thread, but could i possibly be the first one to say he's an idiot?

he cross the magical line when he started removing brackets for reservoirs and replacing them with zipties and/or tape.

Holy shit wow, I just read through some of his weight reduction...unless I missed it, did he not replace his bumper beams or foam with anything??? If not, I really hope that's a track only car because it seems really unsafe heh. He better hope he doesn't crash it on a track either, as there is no way that anything in his car is going to hold together, or that he's going to be able to put it all back together if it wrecks...

I left ALL of that stuff back in my racecar - one good bumpdraft or tire wall nudge could pop the bumper off, or radiator if you didnt have it. Besides, how else was I supposed to push miatas around? Some things should never be removed in the name of weight savings.

Lots of effort to take weight out, when tires are the easiest solution to going faster Wink

Yeah I agree, I would never have the balls to remove my bumper beams and not replace it with something. When you start sacrificing safety equipment (he also took out a seatbelt in the back) and replacing brackets and bolts with zipties in the name of weight savings, you probably bought a car that was too heavy for you in the first place.

I'm reminded of those guys who cut that car in half and all that crap to get it into the 10's or something. Anyone have that link?

I didn't read the whole thread, but if he's pulling of the actual bumper reinforcements, I'll see that he's an idiot and raise him a death wish.

Zipties in place of brackets works for some things...
