Unbelievable. Definitely the worst college shooting ever. What's odd is that there was that shooting last year, I have to wonder if there was a connection or if it was just copycat-ism at work.

I don't know about you, but watching the VT president speak at this news conference, he seems totally unfazed at the fact that 21 students (and faculty?) are dead at his institution. Maybe hes just in shock but he doesn't look too concerned. Also CNN needs to drop this whole "I-Reporter" retardedness

Eh different people handle stress in different ways. In a very volatile and stressful situation sometimes its better to cut off the emotions so that you can think clearly and do what you need to do to handle the situation.

Not to turn this into a gun thread, but if they had their CCR's or not doesn't matter. VT has a very strict "No Deadly Weapons On Campus" policy.

Right, I'm just saying that even if some of the victims had their conceal permits, it was still against campus policy.

I am not sure about a guy iwth a rifle, but I am pretty sure JMU hasn't had a policy for very long, if they even have one now?

I know htis is going to sound lame, but like 2 years ago, MTV was doing some show about a JMU girl that had her carry permit, and did carry on campus. I think that JMU was trying to implement a policy then to keep her from doing it, but at that time it was legal, if i recall correctly.

why couldnt shit like this have happend at JMU while i was there?

if you have people you know at tech... lock the doors, block the door with a dresser, sit on the floor, keep the news on and the cell phones charged.

this is surreal. i spent a ton of time on tech's campus when i was dating Jen back in college. i love that place and i had always thought of it as such a safe, quiet place.

the shooter didn't deserve death.

It was in the Breeze last year, but JMU's policy is basically no guns on campus whatsoever. The counter argument that was brought up was that such a rule is unconstitutional as everyone, student or not, has a right to bear arms, but come on...there is absolutely no reason why anyone would need or want a gun on the grounds of an educational institution. Just because someone has a permit to carry one doesn't mean that they have the mental stability to not kill someone the second they get pissed off...if you really fear for your safety on a college campus, either transfer, or carry a knife/stun gun/baton or something and most importantly know how to use such a defensive weapon should you not have the option to escape the situation.

On a private school campus they can say you can't bring spoons on campus if they so please but on a public campus I feel like a ban on firearms is unconstitutional. I dunno, maybe our resident lawyer can answer on that.

Either way banning firearms on campus certainly wouldn't prevent
something like this happening anyway. If a nutjob decides he wants to bring a gun one day he's going to do it either way.

That's true with anyone, anytime, any place. The overwhelming majority of firearm owners don't go around shooting people when they get angry though.

Self defense-wise a gun is not always the best weapon depending on where an attack comes from but its not really anyone's place to say what kind of self defense someone should use (short of hand grenades I guess).

For the most part I think people get a false sense of security with guns. Using a gun effectively at close range takes a lot more skill than just being able to cock the hammer and pull the trigger.
