Didnt watch F1... watched GP on Ed's TV in the living room. I think the Daytona and GP races are the only thing I've watched on TV since I moved in.

That's because you're busy surfing the internet for pr0n and $up3rm0t0s.

Back on topic... kinda... I decided to stop wasting my plasma and finally ordered HD. Of course the install date is 2.5 weeks away. Sad

I was waiting for 1) DirecTV to get HD-DVR with local channels and 2)to finish my basement before getting it but after seeing some March Madness on my parents' 60" plasma in HD I decided #2 wasn't going to happen soon enough.

ooh my .02! i didn't bother reading what everyone else had to say

bang for the buck: sony sxrd or samsung dlp.
what i have now: 42" samsung plasma. great set, and it was free via work.
what i'd get: a 42" lcd, but i don't know which brand. the westinghouses (and even some walmart brand stuffs) are cheap and fare well in reviews assuming you have a tuner and stereo. i wish i could afford a bravia.
other thoughts: plasma uses a shit-ton of power; lcd or plasma are musts if space is a concern; plasma can't really be moved; 1080p is all hype, you won't notice a difference.

if i had to pay for my current set, i would still be as joyed as i am. hd is amazing.

I can't wait until DirecTV comes out with the 100+ HD channels. Right now it's kinda lame because there's rarely anything good on the like 12 HD channels I get, aside from ESPN.

No love for Discovery HD?

DTV says they're going to have 60 HD channels by year end.

Discovery HD and ESPNHD are really the only two HD channels I ever watch.... sometimes the TNT or TBS or whatever if there's a good movie on. I don't get local channels in HD because supposedly I have to order an extra dish for like $50 w/out install just for that in my area, which I think is bullshit so I've just passed on it.

I'd think local channels would be a big one with primetime shows and sports. Not being able to record locals was a big barrier to me upgrading. Their latest DVR allows the viewing and watching of locals in HD so that's why I pulled the trigger.

Chris, you out of all people surprise me that you didn't have HD - there simply is no substitute. There are many other small channels like Discovery HD out there that come as part of the HD package for most networks - each provider seems to have a different selection. I had a 40" Samsung LCD that I loved, but somehow the screen got broken during my move. Samsung LCDs have fantastic color and image fidelity, but the refresh rate sucks as and sports action can be blurry. I replaced it with a 42" Samsung plasma, that I like so far (much better than the previous generation 1080i Samsung available that my friend has). Electricity in CA is expensive, so I can't wait to see my monthly bill.

I can honestly say I sucked a big fat donkey cock on this one. I bought a 50" Samsung Plasma when we moved last April and I've been watching SD on it for nearly a year.

My initial objection was as I stated previously, the inability to record locals, because DVR has become such an integral part of my life and I mostly record locals. I hadn't pulled the trigger on the newest technology because I was trying to wait until we moved the DLP projector that came with the house to the basement and set them both up at the same time. I also marginally disapproved of the lack of programming but DTV is supposed to get serious about it this year. I'll finally be current come April 5th, it can't come soon enough.

I wonder if they're going to jack up the rates for HD programming when all the new channels come out. I'd imagine so =(

They shouldn't... because you're already paying for the "ability" to receive HD... but I'm a realist in that I know what makes sense and should be considered solid business practice is not what happens in the real world.

They should allow existing, paying customers to keep their same monthly cost for HD channels, and if they're going to jack the rates they should only do it for new subscriptions. Sort of like how cell phone policies do it sometimes.

Didn't know where else to ask this

I have a cheap Philips unconverting to 1080i DVD player and have component cables connected to it. I have a 32" 720p/1080i Samsung LCD. Is it true that the DVD can't upconvert to 1080i unless it is connected to HDMI? I have 3 available slots for it.

If you can't tell the difference, does it really matter?

But your component cables should display up to 1080p unless your dvd requires HDCP decoding, which is where the DRM-enabled HDMI connection comes in.

But just because it *can* upconvert doesn't mean it's going to look any better.

Plug in both and see if you can tell a difference. I doubt you'll be able to.
