Electrical Guru's~ Headphone jack??
#1
Does anyone have a ohmmeter or continuity tester?

So that i can determine the channel designation of the tip, ring, and sleeve of a standard headphone jack.

Or maybe someone knows the wires coming out of the headphone cable are black, red, and bare metal with no insulation??

Little help thanks,

Jash

BTW, im asking because i am adding an aux input to my stock head unit, to be used for an IPOD or sound alerts when scanning with my laptop tuner software, etc

just put the headphones on, and put the jack in slowly - when the tip makes contact, you can tell what speaker its coming from - the next ring will be the other - and maybe the other is a ground, I think.

Well because you have tip ring and sleeve it sounds like its a stereo jack, so I think the configurations is:

Tip: left channel
Ring: right channel
Sleeve:ground

I would assume the red wire would be the tip/left/positive line and the black wire would be the ring/right/negative line. The bare metal line is the ground.

hunter that is what i was assuming as well looks like i need to take apart another jack and see which wire goes to what.

but im pretty sure i will find out that exactly what you said

red wire would be the tip/left/positive line and the black wire would be the ring/right/negative line. The bare metal line is the ground.

You can reverse the red and black wires without a problem on the head phone jack, it will just reverse your left and right stereo sound.

It's just like on a big speaker that has input an output, you can run input into the output jack and it will sound the same.

NERD ALERT ...

You can use reversing the polarity to do noise cancellation, which is pretty cool. I'll stop talking now.
