Offseason maintenance
#1
So I'm bored out of my mind and started to think about what I could tinker with in the car.

I'm painting my wheels this weekend and if granted more time, I'll pickup some dry ice and get rid of the sound deadening. Hopefully I'll have time to install my heimjoints and traction rods.

Do wheel bearings fall under preventative maintenance for DE'ers or should I not worry about it until I feel a wobble at the wheel? What about repacking my cv axles?

i think the bearings can go until they fail, sometimes they can last a very long time. cv axles might be a pretty good idea though....they don't really fail unless you snap one or run out of grease.

you could always "simplify" some things in the car....maybe make a fuse block for easy electrical work or install a remote oil filter to make access easy and increase oil capacity.

If you are really bored, dont you have any little projects that dont cost any $$ to knock out?

Or... just get the speed secrets and skip barber books and use the time to read Smile

I read SS before I go to bed but most of my reading is about real topics, RJ. Not this bullshit money sucking hobby.

What about rubber stuff? After a decade and a half I'm sure a lot obushings and stuff have worn out if you haven't already replaced them. I'll be looking at doing all the major suspension joints in my daily driver soon - ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. How is that kind of stuff doing on it?

I like using winter for tidy-up projects, too. Scotty's distribution block would be nice to have if you ever need anything electrical to be modular, or just easier to deal with. Go back over anything you've done before that got rushed to get on track and fix whatever you didn't like about it from then.

How about hoses? We had that thread a while ago about them being wear items.. it'd suck to lose a day because one of your coolant pipes split.

Spark plugs? Filters? Valves?

That's exactly when my wheel bearings failed, 140k miles. I did the front wheel bearings at first, then the rears started making noise about a week after that. I'm with mike, just go ahead and replace them.

All the stock rubber was replaced with Poly. Most of the poly will be replaced with heim joints. Balljoints/tierods were replaced this summer.

I'll put the bearings on the to do list. Thanks guys.

I have 7-9 coolant hoses so I'm sort of putting that off. Why? Cause I enjoy welcome engine destruction.

andy,

if you want a really nice and easy thing to do for your shifting check out on the board about how you can change your shifter bearings out with skateboard bearings.

there is a whole write up on it on the mr2wiki
