How loud are bikes?
#1
So as I was leaving VIR a squid on a mid-90s FZR (? - round headlights)
did a full throttle blast by me going the other way. It was ear-peircingly loud. Ive been on track with some LOUD racecars, as well as watched pro races, and never heard anything this loud. Is this typical for most bikes? Granted I was pretty close to him when he flew by and I probably got the worst of the sound, but damn my ear hurts just thinking about it.

They can be pretty loud when you uncork them. The VFR had open pipes for a while and I couldn't ride it without earplugs in... full throttle was pretty much out of the question no matter what.

There's a scene in 'Faster' when they're interviewing a Ducati tech in the pits and Hodgson's bike gets started (open pipe) behind him. He's at a race track, working on bikes that just come short of touching 130db, and he still jumped when they started it. I guess that's a good picture.

It doesn't help that the motors rev to the moon and back. A Harley loping around at 2,300rpms has nothing on an R6 approaching 15 grand. The real killer when you're on one isn't the motor noise, though, since the can is behind you and pointing away - it's the wind noise. If you're not careful you can get tinnitus (sp?) from the prolonged exposure to a stressful noise.

Get some in-ear headphones and you won't notice a thing Wink
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

The GP bikes are on another planet of loud. The AMA Superbikes sounded like weedwhackers in comparison. I could literally feel my eardrums vibrate when I was at trackside...

I actually had this after our ride Saturday from prolonged exposure to the wind noise in my helmet but it went away overnight.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Being that i own an FZR now... its one of the louder bikes i've owned. it does have a slip on, but its hella loud no matter what. and those bikes to rev to 11.5k... its an inline 4 with 4 independant carbs... as long as you are riding "normally" the bike doesnt bother me... and it depends on the helmet to how much wind noise you hear... but yes the little foam ear plugs on long rides can go a long way.
