On my way home today I was passing a house with a fenced-in back yard and a "Beware of Dog" sign. The dog (a Jack Russell) had apparently dug out of the yard. As I neared, he actually ran to intercept me. I braked a bit and then sped up, which has worked just fine on most of the dogs out here, but the little bastard actually adjusted his trajectory to match
I ended up hitting him with the front tire, doing about 45mph, and he spun off the road. I took the bike home, then came back in my truck to see what the aftermath was.
The owner turned out to be a motorcyclist too and met me getting out of the truck to apologize and make sure that myself and the bike were ok. He apparently saw the collision from the front porch. As for the dog, it turns out I only broke one of his hind legs. Since it wasn't life threatening, none of the local vets would take him, so he gets a nice painful night of reflection and introspection before going to the vet in the morning.
I'm really glad that my dogs don't dig (much). Ride safe fellows.
