exposing an engine
#1
I've got a question about leaving an engine exposed for a longer period of time. I'm planning on using the oil pan from our parts car for my car, which would mean leaving the engine without much oil. We're not sure how soon we can remove the engine, so it could sit outside for a while (car is covered but still exposed to changing temps, etc.)

would this pose a problem if we wanted to sell or use the engine later on?

also, as far as towing the car away once its stripped of what we need- there isn't any easy way to move the car once the suspension and wheels are off is there? I'm planning on just leaving the suspension and putting on a set of wheels, having the car towed away (or move myself) and then taking the wheels off once its at the junkyard.

Pull the pan and throw a bag over the engine to keep dirt and shit out of it - its fine to sit without oil.

Make sure you seal it up good, otherwise it is going to rust out. When people want to keep bare blocks they cover them with oil and wrap in a bag.

That's a good idea. I find cosmoline or regular old wd40 is a little less messier. Also, I don't exactly know what you're talking about in terms of what suspension parts you're taking out, but I can't think of many suspension parts that can be removed without affecting the wheel's clearance inside the fender.

Junkyard guys will come and get anything, it doesn't to have wheels. Strip everything that you want and call around to see who would be willing to pickup some free scrap metal. Rex and Dave did that with their Prelude, Danny and I did that with a 944. In the 944's case, it was a shell with the front half of the car cut off and they still agreed to pick it up.

yup, a LOT of E30 shells have been dragged outta here. If they're up on blocks or stands, they can just slide the flatbed under there, hook up a chain and pull it on. They're amazingly quick at it.

Alternately, you can use a sawzall...something I've always wanted to do but never tried.

If you have a title, the junk guys will come and get it, period. If you don't have a title, you might have to call around a bit, but they'll probably still come and get it.

cool good info. I'm thinking of taking the car to get the oil pan re-threaded this weekend rather than spend the whole weekend taking the pan out of 2 cars and re-installing one. I read its a major pain. plus this will keep the engine sealed up a bit longer.
