Allow myself to introduce,
#1
Well, myself.

Probably about 6 months ago I joined here, and then Promptly never came back. I can't remember why, I think I just forgot.

So I'm going to introduce myself again.

My name is Henry, but most folks call me Rex. I go to BC, and I'm an Info Sys Mgmt major. Which, I'm ashamed to say, is something of a Joke. Haha, jokes on me, I guess. I work with Dave, and I'm trying to scrape my dues together.

Now, my car.

I drive a 1991 Nissan 240 SX. The bad:
  • Jacked up passenger fender
    Slightly grindey second gear
    2 different kinds of tires
    Unfathomably shitty seats. (they're awful)
    Broken antenna.
    Holes in trunklid.
    Lower than stock gearing.

But, the good:
  • Infiniti J30 Viscous limited slip (where the gearing issue comes from)
Infiniti Q45 brakes (ok, they're in the box, but they'll be on by May, damn it!)
Q45 MAFS (Ok, it's in the box too. But it's HUGE! 90MM!)
    Not stock stereo.
    H4 Headlights. (I couldn't stand the stockers)

Finally, to round out the good is the immense mound of iron and aluminum standing on it's oil pan in my garage. A spare KA24DE. Paid 100 bucks for it. But I can rebuild it. Make it faster, stronger, more powerful. *insert "million dollar man noise" here* If my calculations are correct, I should be able to get ~220hp (wheel) with my stock injectors and a T3, with no intercooler. (not that I would ever, but my point stands) Maybe more with some tuning.

Now, allow me to answer your questions:
No, I'm not going SR.
Yes, I know 240's are trendy now. I wanted one long before this whole craze came about.
No, I don't drift.
Yes, I do all my own work, except my oil changes cuz Wal-mart is such a damn good deal. (30 bucks for mobil1 and you'll vaccum my car? Sure, have at it.)

I also have a garage and a massive torque wrench.

No, that's not a metaphor. Smile

i agree with you on turbo'ing the ka24 than going to sr20, a turbo ka24 will make some impressive torque figures Smile. What kind of boost do you plan on running, seeing how you're keeping stock injectors and no IC id be assuming 7psi or less? I don't know what the compression ratio on the ka24 is but if its fairly high you could slap a thick head gasket on when you rebuild to bring the compression ratio down a bit and squeeze a lil more boost out of it, definitely sounds like its gonna rip though

Yeah, yeah Dave. Just tell me who to give my dues cash too.

Dierwulf:

Yes, the more I began to study the KA, the more I liked it over the SR. I mean, closed deck iron block, oil cooled pistons, 4 valve cross flow head, decent aftermarket, high availablilty of parts...Show me a better turbo platform. My boost plans are unknown as of yet. A guy offered me an SAFC for 80 bucks, and if he's not joking, I don't know what I'll run. I'll need some kind of air/fuel controller to run the Q45 mafs, and if I have an AFC, I can run larger injectors, and pratically infinite boost. And I mean shit. I paid 100 bucks for this engine, and I am thinking about buying a spare for another 100. If I blow it up, it's not like they're gonna be hard to find.

I would also be running either a big fat-ass front mount or an Air/Water intercooler along with probably a water/ethanol injection system into the throttle body as a safety net. If the KA has a weak point, it's that it MUST NOT detonate, as I'll destroy my rings in pretty short order. But to start, I'm thinking 6 or 7 PSi and tune up. And as far as compression, it's either 9 or 9.5 to 1, but if I'm going to rebuild it, I may just save a little money and do 8.5 to 1 low comp pistons. I'll definitely do that if I have to bore it, because 8.5 overbore is just as expensive as stock comp overbores pistons, and if I need new pistons anyway...

Plus, when you blow up a KA, it's almost never catastrophic. Most of the time the rings go, and you need new rings, or you spin a bearing.. I've never heard of anything really crazy, like a rod through the side or anything like that.

And yes, turbo KA's make disgusting torque numbers. All of the SR advocates whine and bitch about the long stroke, but for me, a 7k redline is perfectly OK as long as there's a big fat boost curve underneath it. (which there is)

Plus, if my math is right, I can have a quasi-reliable 220hp/250tq car for under 1500.

Do that with an SR. And when your done, let me know how much it was to ship your damn water pump from japan.

I had a 240 for a couple months. Nice car, I still really like them. Unfortunately because of all the dorifto crap they are up in demand and price, and are even becoming theft risks.

oh, and the lower gearing is a good thing! (unless you mean lower final drive = higher gearing...)

That's what I meant. Lower number for final drive= higher gearing. I always fuck that up.

Anyway, It'll be all good when I go turbo, allow me to stay in the meat of the power longer.

Your car just reminded me why I loved my TSi so much. *sigh*

But now that I have direction, it's gung-ho. As soon as those two guys pay me for my truck, it's time to shop for head studs and main bearings, and try to find someplace to get my head ported.

Hrm. "Head ported."

Sounds dirty.
