I've thought about purchasing a gun for protection for my family and stocking up on ammunition for when the Apolocalypse inevitably arrives (which I'm thinking is pretty soon). Any suggestions, aside from a shotgun? I was thinking more along the lines of a really intimidating handgun.
Keep in mind I know two things about guns: jack and shit.

well, if you are serious, it comes down to what u might use it for. If purely for protection a shotty is your best choice. A PUMP ACTION 12ga. The reason I say pump is you won't have a jam in a firefight. The problem with a small arm for protection is its much easier to shoot youself or someone you love in the home with a small arm. This may sound silly...but if you want something that is fun for targets and good for protection I would really suggest a AK-47. I love mine and I know no one is comin in the house with about 10 rounds sending my message for me. Something like that, a small tactical rifle/carbine. An M4 or something like that would be good too...the small H&K. But they are something like $1500 vs. the AK at $400. Just my thoughts

I think the sound of a shotgun being pumped would send a very clear message to whoever has entered your house. That and the shot wont penetrate the walls as easily as a hand cannon, so you're less likely to hit something/someone in another room.

A pump 12 Ga. shotgun with a magazine extension, flashlight mounted and a short barrel is the best house defense gun there is.

you probably wouldn't, but if you did need them, they would be nice to have. I lived in St. Petersburg FL in the early 90's and there was 2 nights of riots. Several buisness owners had to use firearms to defend their buisnesses from looters using multiple shots. That is the tool I would choose.
