I managed a fourth place finish in the kart race this past weekend at Summit Point. Most of the race was relatively boring for me as I was nursing a somewhat sick kart for about 25 minutes of the race. I did have an exciting first 6-7 laps of the race running with the front pack until my engine started sputtering in T3 and T5 due to a fuel pick up problem. I also had a nice little collision in T5 and was accredited with an "awesome save". The last few laps of the race, I started loosing brakes and the brake bias was off, so I was brake checking going into T1 further slowing my lap times. My brake pedal was at the floor by the end of the race. I did learn a bunch in this race. Learning to race around mechanical problems is part of racing that may help me in the future. My ok finish was accredited to a lack of competitors at the end. I did manage to improve my lap time this weekend and am sure I will do much better next year.

Yeah, Summit Main.
Speeds depend on the class. The class can be changed simply by installing a different exhaust. For the class that I drove (Yamaha Sportsman Medium) the lap times of winners are in the 1:34's.
Next year I plan to run Yamaha Medium in which lap times are in the 1:30.XX's.
Main straight speeds vary from 95-115mph for most laydown enduro races. Turns are typically taken at higher speeds in the karts as compared to cars.
The Unlimited karts run 1:15 lap times and about 150mph on the straight.

that is awesome! i can't imagine the thrill of doing 100 mph with your back 2 inches off the ground.
nice finish btw, all things considered. with races like this do you really have to factor tire wear in, or are the races too short for that?

Tire wear is not an issue in my 45 minute races. I have ran 3 races and practice(about 280 miles) on 1.5 sets of tires. People with better budgets and or faster karts do change tires at every race. Heck, new tires are only around $35-45 each.
It is a relatively cheap and fast form of racing.
