bored yesterday, so i tore into my car and got out the dremel
in the A4, the fog lights are designed to only operate during use with the low beams. i don't like that so much, because i'd like them to also be on during high beam use to provide maximum lighting, and i'd like to use the fogs when the headlights are completely off for the best lighting in super-thick fog (european A4's are set up like this, EDM fo life dawg). this also allows me to operate the front fogs independent of the rear fog light (the fronts turn on automatically if the rear is turned on in stock form)...although i could care less about that.
most importantly though, i think it looks cool to just have the fogs on.
this meant pulling out a relay from behind the glove box and doing a little soldering. three contacts are ground down, and three are connected via a nice little ghetto shunt (not my work, someone else's picture). when the relay is plugged in, it doesnt go completely in so there is space for the shunt in between the relay box and where it plugs in.
relay getting violated:
fogs only:
fogs with highs:
the end.

running fogs when it is not foggy out is VERY annoying to oncoming drivers, I generally give people using fog lights in unnecessary conditions a few high beam flashes just to let them know that.

hmm....i've never had a problem with other people's fog lights in the past. also, all the lights on my car seem to have a very distinct cutoff. that's part of the reason i wanted more lighting with the high beams, even they have alot of cutoff.
i'll stand in front of my car with the fogs on next time i'm out and see how bad it is. thanks for the heads up though, i don't like the idea of blinding everyone.

My foglights have Silverstar bulbs in them, so you probably wouldn't like it if you passed me =p
Very cool mod Scotty, I wonder if something similar can be done to my car.

Very cool mod Scotty, I wonder if something similar can be done to my car. You can do this pretty easily to most cars - it's a switch mod on the SHO and Jack did it to the RX7 IIRC. Silverstar bulbs are the best OEM replacements I have seen (I have them in both the GL and SHO.) And as for foglights, I use 55w offroad driving lights. I have only had one or 2 people flash their highs at me over 6 months in the SHO, and my headlights are all misaligned as well (but I can see half a mile up the road 8) .)
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

people don't flash their headlights at me when i drive with my highbeams on the light output on my pile is so bad i regularly drive with them on...

Yeah, I did mine... too bad it won't pass inspection like that. I had to rewire it super quick at the inspection station. lol.
but he's living in Georgia with a fairly intact car, so he has nothing to worry about.

seriously, GA inspection would pass a horse and buggy pulled by a two legged horse if the horse had a catalytic converter strapped to its ass

i like this mod, i'm going to try and hook mine up with the parking lights or separate.
one of the main reasons i like it....much easier to see a car with lights on, and with fogs they're not as bright, but if they're coming at you it's much easier to tell their distance and their speed if they have some lights on.
i agree... i love the way it looks too!
