Can I talk serious? I have a question for you guys. Since you seem to be more of the “true” enthusiasts of VA internet. I figured I’d post this rant/enquiring thread here. This has to do with motor sports vs. trucks. I am a 33 year old divorced white male. I grew up in Staunton, and then moved to Harrisonburg in `99. I have always been into the sport, but it really didn’t progress upwards until after I bought my truck in `95(see sig). If I could do it all over again, I would save and buy the sweet little white, 1998 240 SE Limited Edition that was sitting at Staunton Nissan a few years after my truck purchase. I still dream of owning a `98 240 someday. [Sigh]

Where do you guys see the sport and trucks? In the back of my mind I feel a truck can be just as fun. But, way back in the depths of my brain I feel I don’t belong. Most of the time, those depths surface before anything. That is kind of the reason you don’t see me coming to meetings and joining in on the fun. I would feel out of place. Partly because I have a `92 Ranger that is succumbing to the cancer of rust; and partly because I’m old, comparatively speaking. This was all brought on by an incident today while at Advanced Auto on 33. As I was pulling in, there was a 240, white, with black wheels. Something like “WCKD240” on the plates. As I parked I looked in my rear view, I caught a glimpse of what I can only describe as “laughing at my busted ass truck”. Now of course I don’t know this for sure, but that’s the feeling I got. Do I really care? No I don’t, because quite honestly, I think I would give him a run for his money. Unless of course he has done the famous SR20DET swap or has a boosted KA. See, I do know some things even though I drive a Ford Ranger.

But this is what I am getting at. Can you, “serious motor sports members”, ever take a person in a Ranger, S-10, Tacoma or anything or the sort, seriously?

By the way, if the owner of that 240 is a member, or somebody knows him. I’m not trying to be rude towards you/him. He just happened to be a part of the scenario that created this thought/post. I like the car, I’m a 240 fan.

The way I see it, this club is more about enjoying driving than it is about what you actually have. Sure my view might get tested a little bit if someone came in here with an Escalade on 22's but for the most part its about the enthusiast, not the car.

Besides your truck is probably faster than a good number of cars in the club. And there's even one person who's taking their truck on track...

I was in a similar situation - I found the tow vehicle before the track car. I tracked/autoxed/dragged the tow vehicle, and had a great time



I think as far as autocrossing and HPDE type events, it's perfectly feasible to have someone driving a small truck - as long as they're safe and that they have some realization that the *physical* properties of the vehicle (higher CG, weight distribution, etc) mean that they can't do things in quite the same way as someone in a sports car. And drag racing - jeez, trucks are doing that all the damn time, in a very serious way.

Another side note - the classroom instructor down at Road Atlanta (Dan U) was relating a story about a Legends car driver who, due to some issue with the regular car, took the tow dualie out on track for a few laps. And passed people

Your not the only one with a truck as their driver that loves motorsports, i drive a '97 Tacoma with offroad tires and every time i drive it i fall in love with it more than the day i got it...anyway hopefully this summer i will put the beast in an Auto-X :twisted: , if i can get some money and put some 17's and street tires on it.

My family has a '95 Dodge Ram that becomes mine after I graduate, and to be honest, that thing is almost as fun to drive as my camaro was. I absolutely love trucks.

And as everyone else has stated, don't feel like you should shy away simply because you own a truck. Gerald hit the nail on the head when he said, "...its about the enthusiast, not the car." Besides, the engine in the 240 you want is basically the same engine thats in the hardbody truck . So come on out to the meetings or events, get to know the guys, and you'll see that what you drive has almost nothing to do with how your accecpted within MM. Hope to see you tonight maybe.

since your fairly new here from reading the forum by itself many people on here can seem like dick heads. i steered away from MM for a year just from reading the forum.. then you have to understand that everyone here is pretty close freinds and busting balls is fun when its your friends. I have realized this and now know that the people on here who appeared to be assholes are actually really cool

it doesnt matter what you drive... if your into motorsports your into it. the car you drive may not reflect that but who cares what people think. i have beaters all the time that are not enthusiast cars at all. sometimes when i drive them i notice cars but in a saturn or old diesel rabbit they wont notice me as an enthusiast.. but who cares.. throw some scca or nasa stickers on the truck then people will know you know whats up

btw i know the 240 you are talking about.. pretty nice s14 but now its got black fenders and shit maybe from a wreck.. deff not turbo..loud as hell KA as far as i know.. also dont think he is on this forum

I think its about the passion you have for any vehicle or a specific vehicle. The reason I enjoy this club is becasue everyone here shares that same gittery feeling when they think of their favorite vehicle. For me, it's my XR4ti. For Dave, it's a Supra. For you, its your truck. My daily vehicle is a tan F-150 that I would not trade for anything. I'd give up all other vehicles to keep it. You and I both know the capabilities of a truck when driven properly!

Please don't feel out of place. Most of us do have cars, yes. Being the minorty is more of a fault of the club (no offence MM) than yours. I think it'd be awesome if there were a bunch of mud boggers, sport truck enthuisists, rock climbers, etc. Motorsports wouldn't be around if it weren't for trucks! Be it the untility aspects of hauling our piles around or the enthuisast aspect (Carlisle has an entire event dedicated to trucks, Nascar trucks, Bigfoot for goodness sake).

Do what I do, own a truck and a sports car =p If you can afford it, you get the best of both worlds. Or keep pimping out your truck and take it to the track; you may fall in love with it again. It would certainly be unique.

As I do love the truck, I still wish I was in something else. I like too many cars, that's my problem. I’ve wanted a 240 for years now, but this boom it has seen makes me think otherwise. I always wanted to be different and go the boosted KA route and that's even starting to pick up.

I’ve always been a believer of "it's not the ride" it's the driver", but sometimes it does affect a person when you have people laughing, pointing or pulling up beside you and revving because they think you’re just another country ass redneck in a truck with a Flowmaster. But then that light turns green and I surprise the hell out of them. (Not that I do that all the time). I won’t say the truck is blazing fast, but for a 3.0L it hauls pretty damn well. My friend and I always say it must have received special attention the day it was made.

Speaking of friends, I’ve been trying to get his lazy ass signed up here. He has two Nissans, a 91 Sentra SE-R , and a NX2000. You might have seen the NX, its red with black SE-R wheels. Those used to be on his black 200sx, you might have seen it as well at some point. He is all into the auto X thing and was trying to get the Sentra set up for that, but I think he’s focusing on the NX now. I’d love to give auto X a try, but I want to wait until I can get the truck dropped. I have some 3” drop beams for the front and just need to get shocks and flip kit for the rear. I’d like to get beefier sway bars also before I tried it.

Well thanks for listening and responding, hopefully I will get out and to a meeting or event. I was thinking about joining this scenic drive coming up, but I am currently without a job, so I have to watch money and unfortunately, I can’t piss premium gas yet.

you truck is just as good as anybody else's car in this club. Many of us aspire to own trucks one day, which would certainly make us no better than you. If you are an enthusiast, you are more than welcome to join us and we welcome you with open arms. We may be a bit standoffish on the forum sometimes, but as Blair said, we are all really good friends around here and as result are probably a little more prone to attack each other personally and have some fun around here. For instance, you'll notice that I am constantly harassed for my rediculous infection of boost rot and ability to acquire piles of shit to drive at regular intervals, two things that don't mix too well. If you are really interested in 240s, we can find them, and on top of that there are several knowledgeable members here which can result in you having one for really cheap that runs fine.
The point is, we don't care what you drive. Shit, Rex drives a geo. A GEO. That is far worse than a modded Ranger That is one of the best parts of this club; the astounding variety of vehicles we have here is amazing (Blair = magazine articles, Pete = strange affection for strange car, Me = ricer addiction, the list goes on. Come on in here and have some fun with us and bring your truck out too, mabye we'll be converted in the process :-)

oh yeah, like Dave said...its really cool having all kinds of cars in this club. that's one of the things i love about it. we have the american muscle, japanese rally beasts, rotary weirdos, bimmer-philes, hatchcraps, etc.....and a few beasty trucks in there too.
