Richmond residents!

On Honda-Tech my location is "The TRUE Capital of Virginia" so someone assumed I meant Richmond (silly person)... Anyway, if you Richmond folk wouldn't mind answering his questions I'd gladly forward them along:

Hey! I see from your location that you're from VA, and I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind. I'm going to be in Richmond in Dec. for a job interview and was wondering if you could tell me anything about the city. I'm looking for info about what it's like to live in that area, cost of living (can I afford to bring H4 #4?), and anything that I absolutely MUST do while I'm there for a day or so. Also, is there only one airport to choose from and what is a good way to get around the city with no rental car? Thanks for any info

If hes downtown, I would go to the Tobacco Company Restaurant... very nice place, or theres a huge B-Dubs near by. both are on Cary St.

Def. Check out G-Force Karts at 4245 Carolina Avenue near RIR.

Other than that, I don't know a lot about downtown.

There is also a place called Bottoms Up Pizza, very near the Bdubs. BBQ chicken pizza is the way to go, nachos are good too.

hmm, only airport around that flies anywhere decent is RIC, umm, Tobacco Company sounds good, been going round there since I was born, not as much now though, cost of living, is about (I'm gonna say about 400-1000 dollars a month rent, depending on where you live, and if you buy, I'm not sure what the CoL is. Cabbing is the best way to get from the airport to your destination, then, walking or buses can be added to your agenda. (i'd like to know where he is staying, it'll help) well, the city itself was the capital of the Confederacy so there is a shitload of history sites and stuff. Don't go just walking around areas that aren't too crowded late at night for safety reasons. hope you get help from this.

Richmond international airport is the only airport there. Tell him to look across the runway and he will see some F16's. If he is lucky, he will even get to see them take off. If it's a weekend I might even be there.

Where does he live now? Richmond has relatively low cost of living but it depends on where he's coming from. Either way my good buddy Jake is a realtor in the area so maybe he can give him the lowdown.

tisk...noob.

Thanks for posting this for me. I guess I didn't think to go to the source. Anyway, here's a little more info. I'm interviewing with the Department of Anesthesiology at VCU Medical Center and they are providing a stay at the Radisson on Franklin St. I'll be pretty busy for the short trip but if there is anything that must be seen/done I'd like to do it. As for living, I don't know if I'm looking to rent or buy, but I need a place big enough for dogs and a handful of cars (some even run). So no 16th floor appartments.

I'm basically evaluating places to live and I'm applying all over the country. Any info on life in VA is helpful, weather, activities, etc. I'm currently in Tucson AZ.

Check the comparative living calculator here:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://houseandhome.msn.com/pickaplace/comparecities.aspx?FromState=AZ&FromCity=Tucson&ToState=VA&ToCity=Richmond&btnCompare=Compare&EarningFromCity=%2450%2C000&EarnToCity=%2448%2C524&Changed=1&prevFromCity=32&prevToCity=28&prevFromState=AZ&prevToState=VA&EarningToCity=48523.8095238095&Ratio=0.97047619047619">http://houseandhome.msn.com/pickaplace/ ... 7619047619</a><!-- m -->

It details cost of living, education, real estate, crime, etc.

There's plenty of good houses to rent/buy in Richmond so don't worry about that.

Richmond does get cold in the winter but it doesn't get a ton of snow. Of course there are several race tracks within about 6-8 hours so you won't be hurting there. As far as things to do, there's a decent amount of culture in Richmond but if that's not enough you could always visit DC (2 hrs away). There is so much to do there you'll never get through all of it. 2 hours to the SE is Virginia Beach for sun and scantilly clad women. So yeah VA is a pretty nice place to live.

eh, richmonds ok. Virtually no traffic, city is nice if you stay within the fan and its western outskirts. Or anywhere near monument really. But as with any city, one block may be very nice while the neighboring blocks may be full of crack/whorehouses lol.

Overall richmonds cool, downtown is nice, Tobacco, richbrau, etc. If someone needs any help with richmond LMK, ill hook it up. Its mah town bitches!

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm hoping to be down there on Dec 3rd and stay for the weekend at VIR, but it's up to the department down there and my schedule back home. I have an application in to a program in Charlottesville as well so we'll see if I can't do them both in one trip.

Richmond is a nice place, it has a lot of the positives of the DC area, without a lot of the negatives like suffocating traffic and retarded cost of living.
Not too bad night life either and in general the people are much nicer.
If there were jobs there I would move in an instant.
