The reason the "killer b's" were so dangerous was not the car, or the driver, but the spectators. The Audi was no doubt a revolution, but it did not have the success that its reputation (and Audi's marketing) say. It only won the constructors championship in 82 and 84. The biggest factor for Group B's elimination were 2 accidents in 1986, the first of which was a Ford RS200 which killed 3 spectators, then Lancia drivers Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto killed in a crash. After that wreck both audi and ford immediately pulled the plug on their group b program. Also of note are that WRC stages in the Group B days were much faster, current WRC stages are much tighter and see lower speeds.

And let's not ignore Group S that Audi was certainly gearing up for. The truth is that B was really the only place that Audi was competitive, and FIA just eliminated it outright, and it pissed Audi off.
