Except the Group B cars were so fast they were dangerous Wink

No reason to eliminate Group B altogether. The reason the "killer b's" were so dangerous was not the car, or the driver, but the spectators. Audi mechanics used to pull fingers (no shit) out of the Quattro Sport's grille, because it was vogue at the time to try to fucking touch the rally car as it went by.

How retarded is that?

Car wasn't the problem. Administration was the problem.

que?
At the time Group B was eliminated, The Audi was heavy, underpowered and uncompetitive. The Audi was no doubt a revolution, but it did not have the success that its reputation (and Audi's marketing) say.
It only won the constructors championship in 82 and 84.
The biggest factor for Group B's elimination were 2 accidents in 1986, the first of which was a Ford RS200 which killed 3 spectators, then Lancia drivers Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto killed in a crash. After that wreck both audi and ford immediately pulled the plug on their group b program.

Also of note are that WRC stages in the Group B days were much faster, current WRC stages are much tighter and see lower speeds.

Posh. The S1 (with its direct shift gearbox...ring a bell?) had barely been able to get the kinks worked out of it before group B was cancelled. And let's not ignore Group S that Audi was certainly gearing up for.

The truth is that B was really the only place that Audi was competitive, and FIA just eliminated it outright, and it pissed Audi off.

unfortunately while audi was working out the kinks, puegot was rocking their (and everyone elses) domes with the smaller, lighter mid engined T16. i've read somewhere that audi was preparing to unleash nearly 1000 horsepower from the S1, but that was prematurely ended when group b did. i cant imagine 1000 horsepower on those stages.
