I'm trying to troubleshoot this in my Prelude (2000, 124k miles)... The H22A is known for burning oil especially when pushed into VTEC.. but not 5 quarts every 3k miles haha. I fixed an oil leak on the VTEC solenoid early on when I bought the car, and since then I don't see any signs of a leak on the ground or on the lower parts of the engine.. From what I read, this could mean the valve seals are going bad and Jake is suggesting it could be the valve cover gasket. I'm planning on painting the valve cover eventually, so I'll probably throw on a new gasket when I do that, but does anyone else have other ideas? I'm really hoping it's not the valve seals because that would mean a full head rebuild.

Does it smoke on startup? Does it smoke under accel/decel/idle etc?? Color of smoke?
Most likely not your valve seals if your not smoking at all. Thats a pretty big hemorrage of oil, im willing to bet more likely a leak you just havent seen yet.

I forgot to mention.. I do have smoke when quickly accelerating.. I personally haven't seen it (people driving behind me have) and I can't remember the color but I'll find out.

sounds like worn rings. blu-ish tinted smoke on takeoff would confirm burning oil under load. it should do it whether the car is hot or cold. if it's only smoking when hot, that would lead more towards oil dripping on something that's heated up. if it's dark black smoke it's running rich. white, sweet smelling smoke would be a head gasket IIRC.
i believe worn valve seals would be smoke primarily on startup and under engine braking (someone correct me if i'm wrong).
it's not the end of the world, i'm sure you want the car perfect but if it is internal, as long as you keep the oil topped off you can just keep driving it and having fun. down the line a re-ring will be necessary though, if that is what's doing it.

those motors burn A TON of oil.
you'll be able to see if your valve cover gasket is leaking. also check the plug and oil pan gasket.

Valve seals arent a head rebuild, unless you need to replace the guides too. You dont even have to take the head off.
Check the PCV valve and all the lines/widgits in that system.

You are correct worn vavle seals will cause smoke on startup after the car has sat for a littles while or longer. Smoking under accel or general running would be rings unless you have a serioursly effed up pvc system and your drawing oil in there.
