Rex's Total FNG Guide to Guns & FAQ
#61
5 years since posting, still one of the best things I've made on the internet.

I know some MMers are sniffing around buying their first firearms, so I'd give this thread a little bumpity bump.

The OP needs to be updated with an AR15 buying guide.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Educate me (and others) on the parts and why ARs tend to be "built" vs. bought out of box.

  Well played as always Rex

I would like to add though, any specific reason for the PSA hate? Or was that pointed at the parts deals in a "build yer own" scenario? My PSA premium mil spec rifle was like $900, included an Aimpoint PRO and has been rock solid reliable, accurate and actually shoots better / has had less failures to fire (ie 0 when using good mags) than my buddy's S&W AR

It's just, generally, not as good. While YOU got a good one, I know tons of people who weren't so fortunate. I'd put stuff like "radical" and a CDNN builds in there too, it's not just PSA hate. But PSA is the elephant in the room for flooding the market with sub-par components for noobs to build rifles off of, if you catch my drift.

I got you, that makes sense! Yeah at this point I've replaced or upgraded most of the furniture but all of the internals are still stock and it's a beast. The only FTF i've ever had was using a shitty bootleg "PMAG" I bought at the flea market

CaptainHenreh Wrote:Rex, I saw a deal on the internet from PSA where I can get everything put together for like 400 dollars!
Please don't. Look, if I had to buy 10 rifles to arm my neighbors I'd maybe consider this. (probably not but maybe) In the end, you'll find yourself replacing barrels and bolt carriers and all kinds of shit, basically rebuilding the rifle to get something worth a damn. Do it right the first time, and you won't have any issues. Yes, this is money, but compared to *car* money, it's pennies.
