I don't care about fire rating, I only need one that will hold a few shotguns and I need a lock that can't be open in 14 seconds. Is it really just as easy as picking one that satisfies my needs? Any brands I should stay away from?

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
If fire rating doesn't matter, then just go to Dick's and get one. But if I couldn't open a safe in 14 second I'd be pissed. (So I am assuming you mean, "Can't be opened without a key in 14 seconds")

The lockers work pretty well for basic security. The stamped steel ones. It won't keep a guy with a drill and a plan out...but a smash and grab burglar won't get your guns.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I'm guessing a key is the preferred method of entry?

The simple answer is yes. Being from Vermont, she had this idea of guns lying all over the house. When I detailed how I would be a responsible gun owner, the idea become much more realistic.

they have combos, keys, and thumb print readers... all depends on the price. obviously they are going to be used for pure sport, because 14 seconds just doesnt make them worth a damn to protect yourself with.
can you locate it in a part of the house you dont normally hang out in? there are some that do a combination of "locks" to secure the weapons... but they are more expensive.
I still dont see whats wrong with them laying around the house.

Ours are too, and as soon as we get a gun safe that's where they are going. I don't have a problem with guns, but I also was taught to lock them up if you aren't using them. Now the handguns, and the shotguns stay out mostly because we go to the range, shoot trap and skeet, stuff like that, but there is no reason for the AR to be laying around, its not a home defense weapon.

All my long guns are locked up all the time. Just the pistols and the AK lay around.

THIS STATEMENT IS FALSE ALL OUR GUNS WERE LOST IN A TRAGIC BOATING ACCIDENT.

I'm not against using them for protection. I'm likely to locate it in the walk-in for our bedroom; the door of which is 2 steps from my bedside. I think I'm leaning towards keypad, because I don't want to have to find a key should someone break into the house.
Putting them in a safe is part concession and part obsession. She wants the guns behind a lock and I have to have a "place" to store all my shit. Whether it be comic books, paintball gun, photography gear or tools... everything has to have a spot.

Did I mention all my pistols are water guns and my AK shoots BBs? I don't go boating.

Safe shopping, not entirely sure. I guess I could go any time although I probably won't buy a shotgun until school is over.
I've been to Bull Run with Matt a bunch of times... I just have to rent until I can get my shit together.
