weird. I have good insurance now, and my private insurance was 130$/month for the same coverage, and same deductibles.

HMO = cheap, less flexibility, more hoops

It has better payout because you're basically always using their doctors and have to conform to their ways. You also get the added benefit of needing referrals but much lower copays. HMOs tend to be more restrictive in their types of payouts (i.e. more exclusions and a tendency to get screwed if you don't follow procedure)... hence my comment.

In a PPO you can basically go pretty much anywhere and only have to pay $20 (after your yearly deductible) but you pay for that freedom.

RJ, if you never go to the doctor you should switch to an HMO.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

The only HMO option was only available in boston (company HQ). Other than that, the PPO i'm on... not much choice.

I got a bill from an orthepedist for $80 saying that my PPO (BCBS) didnt pay for everything....
not sure if i have some yearly deductible bullshit, or they will only pay the average amount for the kind of work and this place overcharges.... i guess i should look into that.

I had an HMO growing up and im NOT under any circumstances going back to primary care providers and referrals. FUCK that shit.

I was told the plan was "only available" to employees up there.

Yes, my job sucks and I am counting the days.

Yes, I did research everything and looked at the benefits package. It wasnt perfect but all the other aspects of the job definitely look good at the time. If the job was great, the out of pocket for benefits wouldnt be a big deal, but thats not the case and what I got into was quite a bit different than expected.

It's likely a yearly deductible but if it isn't, it may be because your provider doesn't participate in the plan (aka out of network). I've never had a provider that doesn't participate in mine but yours may be different.

ditto, I went ahead and called today, I have Anthem (Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO). She kind of balked, as in, well.... if it's an accident, you're covered as any accident, but she was nice, admitted she hadn't heard this question before. She checked and was right, there's no difference. Skiing, skydiving, motorsports, whatever. I don't see anything alarming in the fine print either, so yeah, I wonder what kind of companies don't cover it! :dunno:

Of course, it's still going to be 80/20 after I exceed the deductible, so it's not free or anything.
