You don't really need the cliff notes for this - /. IS cliff notes.
I know vehicles are an opt-in purchase and so are most of their features. Still, this is a little bothersome.

i dont see a problem with it, how is it really any different from lojack?
I don't like the idea of somebody being able to remotely turn off my car... come to think of it, I don't like the idea of an independent system being able to do much of anything to my car. I guess I wouldn't be an OnStar subscriber (when i posted the thread I didn't realize it was an extra service... I thought GM was installing it in all vehicles). But since you don't get it if you don't want it then this is kind of a silly thread.

I thought OnStar was almost a standard feature unless your shit has crank windows and manual locks.

What I'm curious about, and what I had initially wondered, is whether or not it's an Opt-In or an Opt-Out feature. If it's Opt-Out I've kind of got a problem with it..

when i spec'ed a Solstice it was an option.
its also a monthly service fee (they use verizon's cell network) so if you dont pay it, you dont get it.
I think it would be fun to talk to a dealer about this. GM lists it as a service, like Evan says, but would anybody be surprised to see this type of feature remain hidden/active in the name of assisting law enforcement?

afaik, every cell radio already has to be able to call 911 even if service isnt paid for so i suppose the possiblity is there
at worst all it would take would be for the police to ask verizon to activate the onstar radio on the vehicle.
but no way they would go to this effort for a stolen car. now if the owner of the car was avoiding arrest, someone got kidnapped, etc, then its a possiblity, and probably to your benefit, unless you plan on doin some killin' and such and trying to get away in your big american suv.
