Oh crap, someone got JohnC a camera!

Well, I actually got it for myself. And Jess, of course. We bought it for the upcoming Australia trip (the day before that trip got postponed).

Its a Canon Powershot S5 IS. 12x optical zoom and 8 megalopixels. I thought briefly about a DSLR, but this one wins, on account of the fact that I'd rather accidentally drop a $300 camera off of a boat or motorcycle rather that a $1000 camera. Especially considering all of the traveling we're going to do. *And*, it does a pretty decent impression of a video camera. It replaces my 5-year old Powershot A40.

Disclaimer: I suck at photography. My inner photographer is a color-blind retard with coke-bottle glasses. All images link to high-res versions.

Nice, I think you'll be impressed with the Powershot (and with Canon as a whole). I love mine and I'm sure you've seen what it is capable of, still amazes me.

Nice choice - my SD800 IS point and shoot really impresses me. Go canon!

PowerShots are, without a doubt, the best point-n-shoots out there. It gets kind of sketchy when you start talking brands of DSLRs... they all tend to equal out at that point.

Nice camera! Enjoy the HUGE optical zoom :-D

I think Canon makes the best P&S, although I'm partial to the Powershot Elphs.

I just recommended a Canon P&S to my parents and a Canon dSLR to my sister so eat a big fat hairy ballsack!

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
