The earlier E46 engines have been known to blow due to oiling issues. Combine that with the fact that I'm a warranty whore and want one for the 3 years I'll likely own the car you get 8+3-6=5.

It was a small number of engines, there was a recall on them, and the engines in the early cars were warrantied to 100k... I'd sure as hell take one over an S4 in reliability.
