Pray for my friend
#1
My very good friend, Francisco Otaizo got in a motorcycle accident the evening of 24 June while riding with 2 R6s and a R1. He has(had) a 500R just like me. I have know him since 1989. He is currently in the ICU at Fairfax Hospital. I know that had to take out his spleen and one of his kidneys. My dad who is an RN at Fairfax Hospital said he will probably be there for a month recovering from his injuries. Please pray for him guys, that he makes it through.

Sad Sad Cry

I went to the hospital today, he is getting a lot better but is still sedated. Prayers are very much appreciated. There were no other cars involved, he seemed to have hit a curb and then went airborne into a pole. He then started walking around immediately after, then sat down and laid down. 911 was called and he was Medivac'd to Fairfax hospital. Apparently he will be able to make a full recovery sans spleen and kidney.

that's so sad. It's stories like these that might keep me from buying a bike. Best of luck to him with his recovery.

ok i'm going to try not to come off like a dick... and basically tell everyone what motorcycles are about.

generally speaking, most motorcycle accidents happen without cars involved. I'm not saying this poor guy was goof'n around when he got hurt... but thats how you generally will get hurt without it involving a car. case in point... my jackass roomate. he's been riding as long as i have. roughly 8 or 9 years. he's dropped a bike here and there.... but never wrecked. he entered the on ramp to 95 slightly hot... started to drop a knee when the rear end started fishing on some gravel (he was running slightly wide because of how hot he came into the on ramp). he tried to correct the fish but it caught too much traction and he high sided his BRAND new GSXR 600. he was only 500 yards from a hospital and only had to get stitches put in his hand. so much for armored gloves ;-).

if you eliminate accidents that happen when you are "goofing off" then motorcycles are almost as safe as cars. you have to have a maturity level to ride and not get hurt. accidents do happen... they happen in cars, boats, trains and everything else we travel in. its not even safe to say i'll goof off around here because i've riden this road a hundred times. my roomate took that same ramp to 95 everyday to work for 5 years. learn mechanics on the street... how to brake with a bike, how to shift and move with it. you learn to go fast on a track... something i might actually take up since road riding is getting slightly more dull.... hence my need for a new bike.... AND a beater ;-) *i really miss having a bike and i think that is causing all this bike and track talk*

i'm not saying while i was in highschool and community college i didnt do stupid shit. God knows i did REALLY stupid shit on a bike while i was still learning. for that matter i am still learning. everytime i ride i learn a little something new about that bike, bikes in general, or about riding with/around traffic. just dont dick around and your odds of survival are great ;-).... be a jackoff like my roomate and throw 6200 out the window (it was a great deal on a 2004 GSXR with only 28 miles when he bought it).

you still drive a car .... but you know people that get hurt in car accidents. just dont by a bike until you are sure you are responcible enough to ride safely.... and you wont have to worry about "getting hurt." well no more then you do when you drive your car on the beltway.

my only disagreement with you kaan is that there are a lot of really stupid drivers out there that cant see other cars much less a motorcycle. its those people that worry me, not the riders themselves.

but as a mature rider... you have to read traffic like that much more on a bike then in a car... its something you learn to do. i would say 90% of motorcycle accidents are with sport bike riders... and it could be higher. the first time you have someone cut you off or try to run you off the road in a bike.... you learn the lession about being seen. black bike + black clothes and helmet = rookie. the track you take on the lane you are in will also tell me how much you have riden. maturity as a rider will keep you safer from other "people" in cars then you think.

My friend was taken out of ICU, but then they had to put him back in ICU after developing a fever, and possibly pneumonia. With the cracked ribs he is unable to breathe fully in and out because of the pain, this causes his lungs to become infectioned. He also has heart arythmia and irregular breathing. My dad was saying he is worst off now than the day he went in.Sad

I went to visit my friend today is now in an Intermediate ICU. He had a tracheotomy(sp?) done so that it will facilitate breathing. He can still not breathe on his own. A respirator is breathing for him. on 15 July he will have been in the hospital for 3 weeks.

Apparently he was trying to catch up with the folks that he was riding with and was speeding(60 mph?), went over a blind hill and then became airborne, still not sure how that resulted. He had 5 ribs broken on his left torso and one broken on his right. I told you before that his spleen was removed, and this produces red blood cells, which means when he does physical activity he will tire out at a more rapid pace and need to stop the activity immediately. The reason for this is because there is no new red blood cells adding oxygen to the blood.

He probably has another good 1 1/2 to 2 weeks before he gets out of the hospital, I will definitely be happy when that time comes.

good to hear that everything turned out OK. Everybody keep in mind that many victims of bike accidents aren't so lucky, so please be careful out there (regardless of what you are driving).

But being an experienced rider will only take you so far. You can never prepare for everything. There is a town cop who works security for the grocery store I work at. He works a few nights a week and he's about 35 years old. He's been riding motorcycles since he was 12. I would consider him to be the best rider I've seen. But a stupid driver not paying attention still caused him to lose his R1. He was merging onto interstate and was merging into the right lane. As he was doing so a Honda Accord swerved over into his lane before he even had time to react. Her car hit his pegs and launched him off the road. He was wearing all his leather and he had no injuries. He tumbled and slid in the grass and stopped just in time to see he bike snapped in half be a tree. It took two trips in his truck to pick up his bike.

No matter how good of a rider you are, you can only read traffic to a certain extent. On a lighter note, he did buy a Ducatti 916 which is badass.
