E36 sound system....

So, the last of the current gremlins in my E36 is one of the speakers. The driver's side mid range tweeter to be exact. It's a 98 coupe with the harmon kardon system in it. Either way, the thing crackles. It's an odd size (2.5"). I can replace that one from http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/produ ... 9/_cid=323 or just go with a new setup. The other option is.... something like this: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh ... p?t=806392 . Keep in mind, this stereo is all I need. I'm not dropping $500. I just don't want the shit to crackle. Opinions?

I looked into upgrading the system in the E36 I had for a while. I think it was on bimmerforums where I found a few threads where owners had used more standard component systems successfully. Some replaced the grills, but some were able to utilize the OEM grills. Search a bit more if that's interesting to you...

1 tube of insta-rubber + 1 20 Torx screw driver + 5 hours on Sunday = crystal clear audio out of my harmon kardon lovelies...

I just pasted the busted speakers back to together. That was easy. Let's see how long they last though... :crosses fingers:

Just a heads up: speakers fail 1 of 2 ways - the cone and surround deteriorate and the speaker literally falls apart or the magnet burns out and it no longer works (or sounds horrible.) If the speakers are simply old and the surrounds and cone have deteriorated many places will replace both for a nominal fee ($30 to $50 a speaker.) Usually the magnet determines how "good" a speaker sounds so the replacement will simply restore the speakers to their original state. If the speakers sound good and are a weird size / hard to find (as seems to be the case here) this might be a viable option for you to consider.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.
