'93 RX-7 FD R1 for sale...
#1
Hello everyone,
Here's a great opportunity to own a classic. A completely stock (except for Greddy turbo-timer) R1 edition, which has the stiffer suspension, suede seats, no sunroof, upgraded Bose stereo and some more factory goodies that I don't know about. This vehicle is not mine, it is owned by the father of a friend of mine. But I took the task of selling it after I cleaned it up. It is in great shape for it's year, but it is not perfect. The vehicle has I believe 104,280 miles on it. I can verify it if necessary. I have the car in NY and I have driven it about 40 miles to check to see how the car runs. Here are the minor issues that I have noticed:

-the body panels that point to the sky are oxidized, including the hood, roof, rear hatch, and rear bumper. The rear bumper for sure is not saveable with a buffer...it will have to be clearcoated. Please look in the pictures though as I am working on removing the oxidation via buffing and other means. To make the car perfect, both the owner and I suggest a repaint of these areas...the other portions of the paint look almost new, sans rock chips on the vulnerable lower fender areas. But, these oxidized areas have been significantly improved, and will be further improved as I do my magic. Some edges are missing paint due to an inexperienced detailer removing the paint! Once again, no big deal, but to make the paint perfect, at least to my level of perfection, a repaint is suggested

-driving around, it seems that the second turbo does not work properly. Past 4500, Ryan Farrell says I should feel a second kick from the second turbo, but I do not. Boost seems to drop past this rpm. This might be due to the next issue...

-the oil pressure light goes on occassionally, meaning the oil pump may not be working at 100%. I hear it is not a big fix, and this might be related to the second turbo not working

-the passenger window does not go down, maybe a motor is in need of replacement

-the car seems to have difficulty starting. My guess is an alternator or a battery without much power left in it. Ryan mentioned that these vehicles need alot of battery power to get them to turn over, and so maybe the battery just needs to be replaced. On the other hand, Ryan also mentioned that these cars are difficult to turn-over in the first place.

-the underhood heat pad (the fabric attached to the underside of the engine hood to keep engine heat away from the paint) is loose in a small section...a bit of glue will put it back into place

Other than these issues, the car seems just fine. The owner is looking for $13,000. Please make an offer, tell a friend, or pm me. Finally, the PICS:

Please notice the hand in the upper left...that's the part that is "loose"

Other than these minor issues the car seems to be in great shape.

WOOT oil pump maybe gone? not a bad issue?

If you dont mind an engine with no oil, as my friend Britnney says, isnt oil optional?

Upon further research, it seems that the odd oil pressure gauge reader may be the issue itself...

Low oil pressure + Difficulty starting = low compression = motor rebuild time. And the turbos need to be rebuilt, if the 2nd one isnt spooling up.

With the faded paint, and those other problems you might get 7-8k for the car (no, I'm not offering).

I agree with RJ. I'm not usually one to come in and shit up a for sale thread, but that asking price seems very optimistic for:
1) A somewhat high mileage rotary engine
2) Blown turbo
3) Whatever problem caused the blown turbo
4) Low oil pressure (BAD!)
5) Average exterior paint

Nice exterior, but the price is steep, for all the work that needs to be done.

That's very high mileage for an FD that hasn't had a rebuild. I'm with RJ on this one. Probably needs a rebuild. Probably needs new turbos. I'd also downgrade the paint rating from average to poor. It needs a paint job. List it for 10k on rx7club. It'll go for 8-9k.

Today I took a look at the dip stick...low oil. Now the oil meter seems just fine after giving it some new oil. Good estimate on that one DJ. Yeah, I don't think $13,000 is the right price either, but it is not my car and so I am not the judge on that. That's why the price is negotiable. I think the lowest the guy will go is $10,000, otherwise he will not give it away. But to say the paint is poor is not all that true. Most of the oxidation on the roof and hood is coming out, but these areas I suggest need to be resprayed for perfectionist sake, as there are seriously deep scratches that cannot be safely buffed-out. The side mirrors, well, I'll agree to a respray as well. The rear bumper needs to be resprayed with clear. But the rest of the paint is in excellent condition, especially for the miles on it. As for the engine issues, well, it has never needed a second try at a start-up. And, I'm not going to disaggree about the engine rebuild. If I would buy it, I'd do the rebuild just for the hell of it. But, that's why I say throw an offer and I will happily send it to the owner to see what he says. Thanks for the help and please tell everyone and anyone interested that it is for sale.

Well I hope he's ok with keeping it and putting a couple thousand $ into it...

Good luck.

Ehhh...He's probably not going to put another dollar into it! Not the type of owner who would. I know, it is sad...

Hahaha...Does SF = San Francisco? That's kinda far you know. Round-trip travel expense from NY at a discounted rate of .22 cents per mile is gonna kill you. BUT, I can easily find you a detailer in your area, and that goes for everyone else on the forum if I cannot help. PM me if you need my help!

IDK why you guys think $10000 - $13000 is way out of the ballpark.... the only other RX7s on Autotrader within 200 miles of my house with comparable miles go for the same price or more, and all the cheaper ones look beat on WAY worse than that car AND are automatics.

Instead of hating on Ciro because he wont give his friends car away for $600, why not help him out and post his ad on some other forums??

Ciro - you will probably have better luck trying to sell the car locally through the paper or on Autotrader than on a forum. Every time I have ever tried to sell a car on a forum / Craigslist / Autotrader, I get 5 people a day who are only interested in low-balling and 10 who say they are serious but never come look at the car.

Of the last 3 cars I have helped sell, this is how the buyer found out about the car:

Black SHO - met guy at Advance Auto who bought the car that day.
Friends Talon - sign in window of car.
Red 99 SHO - sign in window of car.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

Uh, because it is?

$15k will fetch you a NICE FD, with some upgrades and a good motor. $13k will get you a solid running car that doesnt have busted turbos and motor.

Thats just the market. If someone posted a SHO for $6k with rod knock, you'd say the same thing.

RX-7s with blown motors on RX7club generally ask between 6 and 9k depending on state of the turbos, driveability, interior/exterior quality, etc. Here's a good example: http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=675453

Nice links I must say. I will certainly agree that there are really nice ones out there for similar prices. But I must go on about how good the good paint on "my" RX-7 looks! I am close to 100% certain that the areas of good paint, which is the majority of the car, is in much better condition than all of the paints on the other vehicles. Look how rich and reflective the red looks on the side panels of "my" RX-7 compared to the others. If you don't agree, no biggie...I'm just really happy with how it turned out. I drove around the car and many complimented me on how good the car looks for it's age and that the areas of bad paint are just minor issues. I wish I was closer to show everyone how good it looks. But, I know, apperance is only half the battle.
