Hawk HPS brake pads, opinions?

Okay so I decided to go with a high performance front pad replacement, and I went with Hawk HPS pads ordered from Pep Boys.

Just curious if anyone on here has any experience with them and how they liked/disliked them compared to stock?
*1996 Impala SS* - 139k mi
Interior:
Autometer 3pod A-pillar gauges (Volts, Oil temp, Oil Press), Galaxy 949 tuned CB radio, Palomar 450HD CB amp
Audio:
Pioneer REV-series speakers all-around, Alpine F345 Amp, Kenwood MP5032 CD Player
Performance/Exterior:
Home-made K&N CAI, Clear corner lenses, Silverstar turnsignal bulbs, brighter bulbs all-around

Chad hates them, but I've liked mine fine. Good grip, not very noisy.

Yea I figured since I failed inspection and one minor thing guy mentioned it being close on failing was front pads and I know for VA the failing inspection for pads is some ridiculously thin thickness so I thought I would change them out, and I figured they would be low especially driving around this hilly area.

FYI failed me for tires (figured this would probably happen but just got new BFGoodrich KDWS courtesy of Costco on today!) and also for improper lighting

Now I figured they wouldnt like the clear corners and strobes but guy went as far as to notice my headlamps werent DOT approved!

No biggie just annoying to change and chance messing up my nice headlamps pulling them in and out, and then have to change back because once youve had 80W/100W headlights the stocker 40W/65W bulbs are no good and with buying nice headlight harness to handle that wattage no way Im gonna stay with stock headlamps way to dim for my car!

i think you can probably do better than HPS's for your car for the money, but i have used HP+'s in the past and i loved them except for the noise, and they dusted a bit.

Utter shit. Autozone PFz pads are better and they come w/ a lifetime warranty (might only be 2yrs now though, I use to track the car on them, free set every week!!)

Are you serious? There's an inspection station down in Harrisonburg of all places that is that stringent? I can go to any mom and pop up here in NoVA and pass just about any car, as long as you bullshit with the techs for a couple of minutes.

Ha. I wasted WAY to much $$$ trying to make hawks 'work' b/c everyone said they were the bestest. I never got a single set of Hawks to last more than 1/2 a day. I guess if I were pussing around in a parking lot dodging cones they would be fine, but what's the point? They just eat rotors like candy, don't last, dust like a mofo and squeel like a stuck pig. I see NO upside. Not like they are 'cheap' or anything, def not cheap enough to deal w/ all the bads.

Have you ever even tried the HPS pads you're commenting on? Just curious. And yes, they wouldn't last a track day. They aren't designed to. FWIW, after the 3rd time coming down into the infield from 140MPH at an impromptu track session at Lowes Motor Speedway in my E36, yes, they faded like a bitch! Tongue (might have been the fluid though, who knows) But they didn't fall apart. And they were back again after a few easy corners. They're perfectly fine street pads.

Haha thats funny I guess it also varies specifically to the car they are on because in one of my other forums the opinion on differences between these and PFZs are that PFZs dusted a little more, worked a bit better once they were heated (better track pad) and HPS worked better on street as far as being better with less heat.


So what brake fluid do most like?

My other fellow B-body owners seem to really like ATE Super Blue and then second is Valvoline Syn (since you dont have to order it) although apparently you can sometimes get Super Blue at Porsche dealers (Guessing ordering online would def be cheaper then dealer!)

also nice bonus of Super Blue is easy to tell once youve flushed old fluid since its blue and i think valvoline similar as well since I think its very clear fluid, either way Im sure I need to flush my system out

To make a totally worthless contribution to this thread - I like SuperBlue because... well... it's blue. But I do motorbikes and we don't really have to deal with heat Wink

Motul 600 - its the best stuff out there without spending 3x or more per bottle. I've never been able to boil it on track, even after destroying brake pads to the backing plate, cracking rotors and trashing caliper seals, balljoint boots and wheel bearings.

yea, I have, they DUST way to much to be a street only pad. The PFz's do dust but a quick rinse w/ the water hose and it comes right off. I had to scrub the shit out of my 10 spokes to get the damn Hawk dust off. One set of my konigs are forever stained from HT10's (it rained at the track).

It wasn't your fluid if the brakes 'came back' after a few turns. That's the shit ass pad.

I use HP+ as the street/autox pads for the Miata, they squeal a little and dust some, but other than that they are great pads. They even stand up to some track time on a light car
