Ok, so I blew the engine up. I'm not 100% sure what happened yet but it was a failure in cylinder #1. I had a "when keepin' it real goes wrong" moment and ran against some jerk on the interstate. I was at a stupid speed for a long time at WOT (thats all the detail we need for MM.org). At least he was behind me and got an oil bath. I'm guessing it burned a hole in the piston (fuel loss detonation) and it then pressurized the crankcase blowing oil out every orifice. The dipstick blew out, as did the PCV valve any anything else attached to the oily part of the boostbox. So without further adieuthe pictures.
Today I went and checked the plugsthis is #1
So thatÔÇÖs what I know so far. I have already sourced another powerplant from an 89 turbo caravan. It will be checked over (compression, flatness of head and deck surface, general visual inspection), have the seals replaced, and get the following modifications before install.
- Balance shaft removal
- Stock 89+ 2.2 TII turbocharger (standard T3 turbo)
- Mopar Performance headgasket
Beyond that it will be as it was. I expect to pick up some horsepower simply from the larger more efficient turbocharger. Boost will stay around the same numbers but I will be replacing the fuel filter and maybe the pump as well as a few other little clean-up things like replacing that ratty rear IC hose and getting the air filter serviced (K&N). I will also be adding a wideband (the one I have for the Daytona) or an EGT gaugewhichever I decide.

Wow when you said blew up, you really meant blew up! There's oil all over the place!! When I blew my motor, it was just spraying oil out of the exhaust, ha ha ... I just cracked a piston ring though.
That's good you got a replacement already and hopefully it'll put you in an even better seat for power. I'm not gonna lecture you on the highway antics, we've all been there before... just be safe mano!!

If by S you meant me When I initially heard I flipped and lectured him mainly because I was already stressed and didnt need the idea of him on the side of the interstate. I too was thinking that the Daytona would take priority now since he was sounding like he wanted to get rid of it. However, after looking at the forum and talking to him I know that the Daytona wont take priority unless he sells the van.

The van cannot sit. It must be dispensed with or fixed. Its not really that big of a project, its not like it will even take that much time. Its just getting things to happen all at the right times to make it work out with minimal bitching from my family. I mean, I have to get the other van to the dealership, strip it of all the interior and body parts I want as well as the engine and then have it towed out by the junk man all in the same day or weekend. Which isn't going to be easy/possible until March unless I get lucky.
The Daytona is sleeping...no one bitches about it down there, its not like I need it for real transportation needs (well, I didn't until a few days ago). It is a project gone out of control. Sylvia wanted it to be simple...and the Omni be the more serious project car. She was right and what it has become was a mistake, and completely my fault. When I sit down and think about what it would take to get the Daytona finished, at first the list seems small and simple. Put the transmission back together, prime the oil pump, time, and install the engine, install the exhaust, paint, and finish the interior and ice. Once that is done and its running/driving then do all the suspension and brake upgrades I have sitting in my back room. That seems like a simple list. But then I really think about it. The fact that I have not honestly fabbed up hangers for the exhaust and piping for the IC, the alarm needs to be removed and re-done, the fuel pump needs to be pulled back out and the intake screen needs to be replaced (I broke it and then glued it and put it in...I need to fix it right). That is just a short list of the larger problems that need to be addressed before I can "just finish my other car." Not to say that those projects are hard...but they take many hours. Hours I just do not have.

I think that's why everyone jokes with you about getting one project finished. I think all of us can relate about there not being enough time in the day, but I think you should focus on getting the van back together for now so you have a somewhat reliable source of transportation and then stop doing stuff to it. Go work on one of your other cars so you make some progress.
Again I'm not going to lecture you on anything cuz I know you're devoted to your cars buddy, but if you're really going to keep cars around to be projects, you have to focus and finish one at a time. Otherwise you'll turn into that 60 year old guy with a garage / yard full of rustbuckets who still holds onto the dream that they'll get finished
