Practice has begun for the Isle of Man TT, the racing starts this Saturday. For those that don't know Isle of Man is...on an island sitting right between the Britain and Ireland. The beginnings of the Touring Trophy were in 1907 making it the oldest race in the world.
The Isle of Man TT is basically an all out time trial over 33.7 miles of Man's streets. It is a notoriously dangerous race because of the incredibly high speeds attained and the high numbers of walls. Many riders have been killed or injured in the race over the years but its charm obviously hasn't been diminished.
Anyway, to give an idea how insane this race is, the top average speed in practice yesterday was 125 mph! Average as in, including all of the turns and slow parts.
This year Speed will be airing some of the racing late at night on June 5th and 6th (11:30 pm and 10 pm respectively). I'm going to try to tape it and capture some of the clips to post here.
A couple of pics:
Points for anyone that can find any video of the TT.
I watched it last year. Anyone care for a mini get-together to watch it?

yeah, that's crazy crazy crazy. In the almost 100 years of running the race, haven't 200 some people died? As in 2 deaths per race? I remember them throwing that stat out last time I watched some of it. :|
here's a video with some pretty badass onboard footage. seriously, these guys must have to wear harnesses to hold the weight of their gigantic steel testicles. listen to the lyrics of the song too, disturbingly appropriate.

and you guys still want bikes... i'm glad to see that!
I have the TT2002 DVD. This guy David Jeffries set the lap record (37 something miles in 17:12 averaging 127 mph).
He died in practice the next year. Came around a corner flat out in 6th doing about 160-170 and lost it into a wall. There's no runoff area, so if you crash... pretty good chance you're dead.

I don't understand why you'd do something that is practically suicide. I understand doing thrilling things for fun, but Russian Roulette is not my idea of fun...

For some people the speed is all and they don't care about the risks. That is why not everyone has the balls to ride bikes, much less race them, much much less race at Isle of Man.

But at a point a "need for speed" is no longer balls, but idiocy. That is just my opinion though.

-average person = not a motorcycle rider
-average guy with need for a little speed = one time bike owner, then sells because of costs/scared the shit out of himself once
-average guy with need for "speed" = weekend warrior motorcycle kinda guy
-average guy with need for speed but no common sence = a newbie with a brand new (wrecked) gsxr1000 or hyabusa... oh he is dead too.
-average guy who likes speed and has larger then average balls = club motorcycle/track guy
- idiot with big balls and no brains = motorcycle racer
-idiot with biggest balls, no brains, and nothing to live for = isle of Mann TT rider
I think Kaan has pretty much got it figured out.
Good synopsis of motorcycle riders.
