I just got a overdue notice from Fairfax County government on Car Tax and this has got to be the third or fourth time I've gotten a bill from them that doesn't seem right.
About 2 months ago I had to go down to the FFX County government center and straighten out my car tax because they will still charging me for the Integra that had gotten stolen. I had a problem with them before that but I can't quite remember what it was.
At any rate, 2 months ago I made sure I paid ALL of my outstanding car tax. But then today I got a letter saying my other Integra is overdue. WTF, why didn't that show up when I was paying for the other car? Now its got $75 of late fees tacked on too.
I suspect there is either an endemic problem with their taxation system or they're deliberately screwing people or some combination of both. Has anyone else had problems with their car tax?

its a chronic issue in FFxCo. My first year out of college i owned a 88 CRX (Yellow) and the 90 CRX (white)... I moved at the end of the year... anyway... Even after changing the registration on the white one, and totaling out the yellow one... they have decided to keep charging me since that date... and i did pay that year, for both cars. I've been there once a year since then to correct the issue... and this year i've been told i owe on both cars (the yellow car i owned 3 weeks before it was totaled) in FFxCo since 2003. I KNOW i paid in 2003 for both cars, and before the year was over i registered the cars to Prince William Co. But FFx still says i owe them for 2003, 2004, and 2005...
Both the Yellow and the White car got stickers in 2003... meaning i had to go and pay to get it. One car was totaled out and crushed with the title handed over to the towing company, the other was registered in PWCo... but FFx wants their money... what a headache.

Up through last spring, Fairfax County tried to collect car tax on my old Mustang. Which I sold in 2002. We'll see if they send a bill to my parents house for that car this year too...
My two feet.
yup.
For a while I kept getting 2 bills for my wrx. Same VIN, 2 different tax IDs and 2 different bills.
Took me 2 years to straighten that out.
Now they are sending me bills for the WRX even though I reported it sold. In fact Im goign to call about that today.
i've been paying taxes on my cars in charlottesville even though they didnt bother to tell me that i dont live in charlottesville and haven't since june 2004. something i never knew until recently is that if you report cars sold/traded/stolen/totaled, etc to the DMV, you still have to report it seperately to your county/city. i think VA is moving to no county stickers to get rid of all this hassle, but i'm not sure.

I think they'd better do it soon before someone does something about the Fairfax County government once and for all...

On my pre-tax statement that the county sends me every year, they have an area for you to mark "sold/traded/totaled" on "XX/XXXX" date, so that when they send you your tax bill, it's not on there. That's Augusta county, anyway...I don't know what Rockingham will do this year, and I don't know what other counties do.

You're supposed to notify Fairfax independently, IIRC. Problem is that they never record the fact that you told them.
My Mom's income was cut once by Arlington county many years back when they didn't record the notice she sent in having sold her car. They said she never paid the bill so they took it out of her check.... so she went down to the office and had to prove that she sold the car X years ago.
I don't think I've ever paid taxes on the bike.. it's just obnoxious and cops can't see the sticker from the side of the road, anyways: I just have to not get pulled over.
