all it takes is a few fanatics to ruin people's outlook on any religeon.
although, think of the "world view" that our country was founded on. correct me if i'm wrong, but it had Judeo-Christian overtones, correct? our country has been a model of free society ever since.
don't get me wrong though Jack. that was a good letter and i agree church and state should stay seperated for the most part.

Difference is that when the Founding Fathers started this country they specifically sought to prevent the endorsement or denouncement of any religion in the government in any way shape or form. Sure this country was founded on a lot of values you'll find in Christianity but many of these values are found in religions around the world as well as among people who don't practice religion at all.
Whichever side of the political spectrum you stand on these are dangerous times indeed. Terrorism sucks and all but I'm very worried about some of the treasonous and insidious attitudes and happenings here. It seems like a lot of people have forgotten what this country stands for and what it really means to be American.

Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Paine, Adams, even Mr James Madison....not christian.
You'd think they'd have mentioned it somewhere in the constitution if they felt that this country should wholeheartedly embrace that particular faith if any.

whoa whoa, not trying to say the founding fathers were all a bunch of ministers or something. i also know that they specifically meant for this country to have freedom of any religeon, among other freedoms...i may be an art major but i'm not that uneducated.
i just meant that our country has had Christian leaders in government for a long time, i don't think having judicial nominees confirmed is going to lead to our country becoming over-run with church and state violations...although i, again, agree with Jack and the rest of you that it is kind of leading towards a problematic trend
It's not just church and state violations that could result. It's the elimination of checks and balances from the federal government. If democrats no longer have the ability to filibuster and the Supreme Court picks up a few more conservative right winged republicans, what's stopping the entire country from turning into an extreme right, republican, conservative Jesus country? Half of the country won't be represented anymore.
Kind of extreme, but that's where I see it heading.

-T I hoped you'd chime in with some Unitarian love!
ScottyB Wrote:correct me if i'm wrong, but it had Judeo-Christian overtones, correct? A very large portion of our founding fathers were Unitarian Universalists or Deists.
I'll chime in with some more UU love...Unitarians and Universalists did not officially join forces so to say until 61...1961.
Diesm, Unitarianism and Freemasonry. That was the deal back then according to numerous letters, autobiographies and personal journals left by our founding fathers.
Seriously...I don't know where all this 'we were founded on christian values or ideals' comes from. Christianity contains the explicit belief that Jesus is the Son of God and chose to die on the cross for all of mankinds sins. I'm sure not even one out of ten of our constitution signers would agree with that statement based on the little reading I've done from people who researched this kind of shit.

Jack, T....i did not know that so many of the founding fathers were UU. i'm kinda ignorant on the subject and should have kept my mouth shut.
honestly i'm also aware that many beliefs/moral standpoints are similar to Christianity in values. I'm not trying to imply that if you think murdering is bad then hey, you must be a Christian.
i learn somethin new every day.
